No one said modern design had to be limited to homes on land. You can find modern style on a houseboat too!
It seems like the perfect place to be during the warmer months is on the water. So, why not live there?! Whether vacationing or long-term living, houseboats are pretty cool. That being said, as modern lovers, we hadn't seen a lot of cool design when it comes to floating homes. Here's one of our favorites. Her name is Jolie and she's from Holland.
So, how do you design the interior of a modern houseboat? The same way you would any modern home... Simple, minimal and functional. This houseboat has plenty of open space and is designed for functional living.
Try some of these floor lamp styles to get the look above, whether you live on a houseboat or on land.
1. Robert Abbey Rico Espinet Miles Adjustable Boom Floor Lamp 2. Bloomfield Satin Steel Contemporary Floor Lamp 3. Kenroy Reeler White Shade Modern Balance Arm Floor Lamp 4. Adjustable White Robert Abbey Boom Floor Lamp 5. Jumbo Architect Satin Steel Floor Lamp
Like any modern kitchen, this design features clean lines and simple white finishes to look larger. There's just enough contrast with some warm wood finishes. We couldn't love it more.
This is one lucky kid, he gets to live on a houseboat and have a super cool, stylish room.
Do your Summer plans include any houseboats?
Black is definitely one of those colors I tend not to use in my home. It can very easily and quickly darken up and take over a space. But when it is done right and used in the right accessories for your home, it can be a real triumph! What do you think? Would you ever give black a try?
This room above has some pretty amazing black pieces that really bring the whole space together. Of course, the abundance of white helps to neutralize such a dark color like black. Even though there is quite a bit of white in the room, it kind of acts as a canvas to make the black accessories really pop and give the room more depth. I especially love that big black six. I want it!

Here are just a few black pieces I think would look stellar in most spaces.
This accordion light is incredible isn’t it? It would add a bit of old school quirk to any room. I think it would look fantastic as a bedside light or a reading nook light. I love it!
And the dining chairs are amazing. I love the look of the black seats with the super dark wood. So pretty! And of course their modern mid century look is a definite bonus.
The elephant pillow is one of those great pillows that would make a statement whether it is front and center on your sofa or hanging out on your kid’s bed. I love the graphic design of the elephant too. Really cool.
Where do you like to look for design inspiration when it comes to spaces that are appealing to both children and adults? I’m always inspired by nature, sometimes cartoons or children’s books, other people’s homes and, of course, Pinterest. But, I also love looking at public spaces.
Places like hotels, parks, bookstores, stores, and activity centers can actually be a gold mine when it comes to inspiration and ideas. Since these places or spaces are many times dedicated solely to children there is no holding back when it comes to imagination. No doubt, they can go big or go home.
I’m loving Nuca Studio, a family hangout and lounge, which is located in Romania. It’s fun, funky, totally simple and yet slightly over the top, all at the same time.
While you may not want to copy the look exactly (perhaps a giant modern elephant is a bit much, although, I’d gladly take one) don’t miss a detail because if you look closely there are always concepts to take home and make your own.
For instance, in these spaces, I love the white with the pops of color, the lighting, the modern seating and brightly colored tables and the fun round cut out windows.

Above are a few simple ways to incorporate this look and style in your home:

A major detail that creates warmth in any space is adding an area rug. Whether you are dealing with a living space or a bedroom space (among others), you will find contentment in your design by simply adding a patterned, colorful rug. It finishes a space perfectly and can make a room feel more cohesive. It also helps with space planning. It’s easier to place furniture pieces around a rug because you are aware of dimensions around you.
We see in the room above that a simple rug with soft colors and patterns easily transforms a space from drab to pretty. The rug also makes the green dining chairs pop.
Create a wow factor by adding a bright, patterned rug to your space. Photographer Jessie Webster chose to use a bright and bold rug in her dining room. It gives her neutral space enough color to add some lovely character.
This living space didn’t need alot of help being beautiful. That’s why I love how they chose a simple, elegant rug that doesn’t compete with the furniture in the room.
For my own bedroom, I chose a colorful rug and layered it on a solid gray rug. It has to be my favorite feature in my room. And because most everything else is neutral in the room, a colorful rug really works.
Happy rug planning!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I'm sure there was lots of brunching going on and some amazing restaurant designs discovered. Did anyone make it to Palm Springs or happen to try out the new Workshop Kitchen + Bar?
Soma Architects was called upon to transform the historic El Paseo Building into a fresh new architectural identity for Workshop Kitchen + Bar. The existing elements were strong and limited the possibilities, but Soma was sure to exploit them. The result is powerful and focuses on the height of these 27 foot cathedral ceilings.
The building is colonial on the outside and industrial-chic on the inside with the vertical design emphasized by tall concrete structures. Modern mini pendant lighting always makes a bold statement when used in multiples and in this case it fills the void and creates intimacy at the communal table. The central communal table is more of a public dining space and the booths on the right and left provide great intimacy for private dining. They are almost like little rooms of their own, don't you think?
The modern lighting stays consistent throughout. When repeating lighting, finding the perfect modern pendant light is crucial. This minimal design works so well with the height of the space as it continues to emphasize it. The modern dining chairs and barstools really blend into the environment throughout the space making them appear perfectly integrated into the design.
Either of these (below) minimal pendant lights would work great in the space.

The concrete bar looks very cool and in Palm Springs something cool is all you need on those hot summer days!
