    Modern prefab home in Portugal

Responding to the modern dream for clean sophisticated design and bright open spaces.

The Mima House is a 387 square foot prefabricated house in Portugal. Designed by Mima Architects, it has a modular structure and can be divided into rooms with a grid of removable partitions. Each side of internal and external walls can have a different color/finishing, which allows a dramatic change through a simple wall rotation.

It costs about the same price to manufacture as a family car. Mima architects researched for years to be able to put together a single home that was fast to produce, flexible, light and inexpensive, yet was a good quality product wrapped up with a pleasant clean design. Fundamentally inspired on the traditional Japanese house, the perfect paradigm for lightness, flexibility, comfort and pleasing lines.

Plywood panels transform the windows into walls to create privacy where necessary.

     the Mima House and Customizing

Despite its standardized construction methods, these houses can be customized in so many parameters, that you’ll hardly see two equal houses.

The restrained order of its standardized building parts appealed to MIMA architects as the hallmark of a deeply rooted culture, confirmed over centuries and easily adaptable to any new development.

  • A Modern 500 Square Foot New York Apartment

Modern house under 500 square feet dining room

A mostly white interior palette gets dramatic with tasteful black accents and carefully curated pops of color. This is an incredibly well designed 500 square feet of space and although the original open plan was sacrificed for a large wall of closets that extends in to the living room, the apartment is practical and functional beyond its tiny footprint. This New York apartment is modern in design, but has a richly curated and well traveled worldly feel with its blend of patterned textiles and unique accessories.

Hope you all had an amazing Labor Day Weekend! Many of us spend so much of our time working and not enough time playing so I hope you had a chance to relax, enjoy family and loved ones. The best long weekends are when you can be at peace with nature and your surroundings.

Rewarding yourself is sure to keep your energy flowing. How will you reward yourself this fall?

A trip to the picturesque Ram's Gate Winery in Sonoma seems like a perfect reward! "In a world obsessed with making things faster, where speed is valued above all else, Ram’s Gate is our way of pressing pause."

     reclaimed wood

The architecture is a modern interpretation of it's natural surroundings and weathered farmsteads of Carneros, while the interior is an eclectic mix of classic contemporary and urban cool.

Designer, Orlando Diaz-Azcuy did no wrong here and created something exciting at every turn. The interiors were designed with close attention to detail, from the open beam ceiling, the reclaimed wood walls, and the natural stone tops to the mill-work. Large glass pendant lights work great in open spaces because they make a gorgeous statement without cluttering the space.

Clusters of seating create intimate environments. Low coffee tables are always great for casually seating spaces.

  • Exposed Brick Walls Have the Best Personality!

    Painted Brick Wall

Exposed brick walls are something everyone loves to have in their lives. Just think about how warm and cozy they make you feel, the stories they tell, and how naturally beautiful they are in their raw form. They really do have the best personality and I've got proof.

Industrial Kitchen with exposed concrete and brick walls

I would love to cook up some old world italian cuisine in this industrial kitchen and tell stories about our travels through Tuscany.

Painted Light Blue Seafoam Green Brick Wall with Art

    Or seafoam green!

At this current time my fascination is with white brick walls! And... I've found a product that would allow every single one of us to have a brick wall! There is a new product on the market called Panel Piedra that comes in approx. 3' x 4' panels that can easily be installed over any wall. My white brick wall would need to be surrounded by natural woods, steel, bright colors, bold patterns, and soft organic shapes. It would look a little something like this...

  • Self-Contained: Marvelous Mini Kitchens

    Boffi Mini Kitchen

I love the challenge presented by small spaces, perhaps nowhere more than in the kitchen. How do you squeeze a functioning galley into a small space and still maintain a certain level of aesthetic in the process?

The standard bearer of the self-contained mini kitchen is Boffi's Mincucine (pictured above). Designed in 1963 with a volume just shy of 11 cubic feet, this mini kitchen covers cooking, refrigeration and storage in a space the size of an office desk, wrapped in a brilliant, minimalist design.

The original Minicucine was updated in 2007 with a gorgeous matte Corian finish.

Students at ENSCI, the famed Parisian industrial design school were clearly influenced by Boffi when they designed their Modern Space Saving Mini Kitchen. Sliding counters and a streamlined design give the concept piece a Star Trek allure.

    Mini Kitchen

With storage, prep and cooking all wrapped into a single, mobile unit, these kitchens contain everything but the lighting. Mini-pendant lights are a great way to light these minimalist wonders without overpowering their diminutive size.

    Mini-Pendant Lights

Mini kitchens can seem almost automotive in their presentation. Concept photos show gleaming stand-alone pieces with doors swung open and there's a distinct emphasis as much on performance as on form. Designers Adriano Conti, Corrado Galzio and Alex Innamorati pack a lot of punch into their design, including a vegetable washer, dishwasher, refrigerator, small pantry and oven. At approximately three feet in diameter, this design could be tucked away into a closet when house guests arrive. Or as the photo shows, it makes a decent cocktail table too.

    Pocket Kitchen

A trend toward higher density living no doubt necessitates small living solutions, yet as logistically accomplished as compacted island kitchen concepts are, more conservative back-to-the-wall designs may be best suited to widespread use. The K1 Kitchen from French company Kitchoo is a minimalist bureau design that integrates easily with a variety of hospitality and home projects.

    Kitchen cabinet

When space is an issue, modularity often carries the day, offering flexibility that stand-alone mini kitchens do not. Forget about what's on the stove, Snaidero's modular Code kitchen system is worth salivating over. It looks great with ample floor space, but can be scaled down to fit a much smaller footprint.

The Library Kitchen system, designed by Phillipe Starck for Warendorf, wraps the kitchen appliances in bookshelves, merging the cultural and the culinary for tight spaces.

    Philippe Starck kitchen

When counter space is tight, it can be critical to utilize air space. Use stemware racks, recessed under cabinet lights and hanging pot racks to help keep cabinets and counters free.

Living small requires living smart. With a variety of excellent plug-and-play and modular systems out there, living small can mean living well too.
