  • Accents of Black For a Modern Home Style

There are so many options when it comes to color palettes for your home. You can go bright and bold or serene and calm. Whatever you love, one color that fits right in to any modern home style is black. In fact, black is timeless and looks striking in any space.

Whether paired with just a monochromatic palette or mixed in with color, you cannot go wrong with black.

    Minimal Living Room

One big reason why I’m such an advocate for black is it hides stains and dirt. In fact black tile is a great option for bathrooms and kitchens. And lets talk about the black ceiling in the top image. Amazing!

This minimalist space above has a few details that I can’t get enough of, including that simple black stove. Against the white wall, it looks like a perfect architectural detail. It also picks up on the black legs of the stool, black books and black speaker.

    White Kitchen

This kitchen has a few layers going on. We see wood, white, color and brass. The black on the wall seems to anchor the room and create a cohesive space. Who says that you can’t mix and match!?

For a dramatic look, paint one wall in your space black. It will create a cozy feel with a bit of sophistication. And modern lighting always looks great against black!

  • It's Personal: Displaying Photos and Objects

    Image from Smitten Studio

How do you tastefully display sentimental photos and objects at home? You know those hard-to-cast-off keepsakes that just don't fit the aesthetic of your home?

Try extending the gallery wall concept beyond photos into art and knick-knacks.

The Curated House offers a perfect solution (pictured above) for that teddy bear you can't bring yourself to throw away. Frame it. You'll love the look and your guests will call you creative rather than creepy.

Update all those stuffy things you're hanging onto by mixing-in found objects for an eclectic look. Pick a palette and accent accordingly. Use boxes to hide the truly unsightly keepsakes.

With photo walls, go monochrome. Weddings and the annual family picnic group shot may not make for sophisticated design. But in black and white your gallery is instantly design-friendly.

With your keepsakes arranged, how do you light them? Many modern wall lamps with clean and simple styling are a perfect fit for an eclectic wall. Spot and swing arm designs can be directed to enhance focal points. Or hang a pair of designer-inspired mini pendant lights on either side of your tableau. This visual cue effectively "frames" the scene.

In the end, sentimental photos and objects are what give your home heart. With some creative treatment, they can look surprisingly good in the process.

  • Get the Look: Modern Drum Shades

Clients and friends often think that in order to make a statement in a room they have to use color. While color is one great way to make a statement, there are other ways to do so as well and drum shade chandeliers are one great option.

Texture, pattern and size are three of my favorite design elements to do just that. Lighting is one of my favorite items in a space, and making a bold statement with elegant drum shade chandelier designs can be a great way to draw the eye up, making the ceilings feel taller, room feel generally brighter, and cause guests to "ohh" and "aww" over the room.

We happen to love neutrals at our office, so these white and natural colored drum shades definitely caught our eye.

As you can see from the inspiration pictures, using a white or natural shade allows your eyes to breath, scanning the whole room without bursts of color breaking up the harmony and flow. When you use a neutral color, play with the size of the shade, chandelier or pendant, as this can be a great way to bring big impact to a simple design.

  • Modern Bathroom Interior Design: Get the Look

    Amangiri Resort Modern Hotel Bathroom
    Image from Amangiri

One of the best ‘views from a tub’ we’ve come across is this modern bathroom at Amangiri looking out over the vast Colorado Plateau. The double shower and spacious bath combined with the stunning view make this one of the most gorgeous bathrooms we’ve seen. The cool slate tiles are a perfect contrast to the hot desert landscape outside. The Amangiri resort is located on 600 acres in Canyon Point Southern Utah and is built around a spectacular central swimming pool.
    Monteverdi Hotel Bathroom

Next on our list is a hotel in Tuscany that is part of a stone village dating back to the 12th Century. Serene and calming are two words that come to mind when describing this bathroom. You get the sense that when you walk into this room the rest of the world just disappears.
The limestone walls and wood accents make for the perfect rustic combination. The free standing soaking tub is an ideal place to relax and unwind, and we love that because of its dark color it becomes the focal point of the room. You can find this bathroom at the Hotel Monteverdi. Monteverdi is located in the village of Castiglioncello del Trinoro, Tuscany, equal distance between Rome and Florence.

The One And Only Resot Bathroom

To get this look at home we have chosen The One & Only resort located on a private island in the heart of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. This modern bathroom is the epitome of contemporary design and sophistication. Two of our favorite features of this bathroom are the ultramodern bathroom lights and the serene and simple modern mirrors.
We have put together a product sort so you too can get this upscale contemporary look and turn your bathroom into your own private oasis.

  • Decorating a Modern Home in Cool Hues

Decorating a modern home in a cool color palette means creating relaxation in the home. Colors in the blue, green and violet families have a cooling effect in the interior space and evoke feelings of openness. By swatching colors from the desert night sky, a rushing river, or a deep lagoon, we bring the sensations of the outdoors, indoors.

Using analogous colors (different shades of the same color) when designing a room with a cool color palette will have a drastic cooling effect. Add in warm accents, like colorful pillows in the turquoise image below, and the room will feel cool but have pockets of sun and warmth. In a violet room, use purple accents like an elegant purple lamp shade or accents in coral, like a coral pendant lamp to add in that touch of warmth while still remaining fresh and cool. If, on the other hand, you're going with a dark blue color scheme, adding in accents in white, like a modern white task floor lamp can help to keep things looking fresh and modern.

    Colorful Home Decor

Cool blues like turquoise and cobalt also can work to make small spaces look larger, so if you're working with a studio apartment, or just a small bedroom, consider one of those hues to gain some visual square footage. Add in metallic details to contrast with the chilly hues, like this Ostrich Rust Babette Holland Table Lamp and you'll usher in a sophisticated warmth.

Lastly, remember to include plants or flowers as the finishing touches to the room--and since we're working with the cooler hues today may I suggest lavender or violets...?
