    Modern Art

When most people think about modern interiors or modern lofts they might think about something cold, raw, and industrial. But they're only fooling themselves.

The use of soft pastel colors in modern art and home decor contrasts the stark white surfaces and concrete elements, creating an incredibly soft and luxurious design. This hand painted wall mural (above) is done in the most beautiful soft colors, creating such a dynamic statement that nearly takes my breath away. The Turkish area rug grounds this space and contrasts nicely with the modern dining table.  Lastly, whether concrete is being used as flooring, furniture or accessories it always adds perfect texture to any modern space.

Most modern sofas can hold their own, but hanging a collection of modern art above brings so much more character to the room. It's these details that allow an individual's true character to show through in the design. The soft colored art mixed with the black and white create a soothing and sculptural effect. A simple modern coffee table is also a great addition to any living space.

And of course don't forget that lighting is art too. A colorful or sculptural pendant light can be the key element to bringing your room to life.

    Modern Architecture

Please join us in welcoming Kirsten Grove from Simply Grove as one of our new contributors. We're so excited to have her! Take it away Kirsten...

When I first laid my eyes on this home located in Danderyd Sweden, I gasped with sheer delight. The colors and the mix of materials make for an amazing modern home. The exterior compels you to want to tour the interior. Both are perfection.

    Modern Kitchen

This artistic home is made up of four large spaces in all four levels, which are hidden within the design. The four spaces create a backdrop to allow the inhabitants a chance to live how they see fit. It’s an unconventional way of living but oh so brilliant.

You will find black tiles on the floor and smooth white plaster on the walls, throughout the entire home. Some may think it’s a cold way of living but furnished and accessorised right, it becomes amazing.

    Modern Design

The exterior of this home is made up of deep blue plaster and oak window boxes. The contrast of the walls and windows are striking and it looks very dimensional, not to mention very grand. Architects Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård Hansson designed this modern masterpiece, creating a simple form that has lasting effects.

Between you and me, I would raise a family in a home like this in a second. Our home right now is somewhat unpredictable and I like that way of living. When choosing to live a modern life, you sacrifice some details to gain a wider spectrum. It’s not for everyone but for some, it’s pure bliss.

  • Downtown Art Walk: Robert Vargas at Work in Los Angeles

    Downtown LA Art Walk

If you've been to the Downtown Art Walk in Los Angeles then you most likely have seen Robert Vargas on these streets painting live portraits. And you've most likely been mesmerized by not only how amazing these portraits are, but the how captivating his live performances are. As the crowd gathers around Vargas selects his models from the audience and creates gorgeous portraits in about 5 minutes. The spectators stand around, jaws dropped, hoping they are the next to be selected to have their portraits drawn by the oh so talented Robert Vargas.

    Live Art

There are amazing things happening down there and this Boyle Heights native and his Pratt Institute education are really bringing out the true characters.

    Downtwon Art Walk Live Art

The emotion that is captured in not only the performance, but in each piece is something that is truly represents the vibe of downtown LA.

    Live Art Performance

The crowds gather around while Vargas goes to town! Who wouldn't want to be one of the lucky ones selected to have their portrait painted?! Hanging his work in your modern interior would bring so much character to your space. His work would be a great compliment to any of the industrial downtown lofts filled with modern furniture.

    Mural

    Retro Mural

Vargas was commissioned to do a live mural of The Far East Movement last year at the art walk. Once the mural was painted, Far East Movement started their performance while the mural dried in the background. The finished painting symbolizes "staying present and capturing the moment," states Vargas. He continues, "Fans of FM and myself will get to experience both Music and Art like never before at the Art Walk."

    East LA Wall Mural

You can not only find Vargas's work down at the LA Art Walk but you can also find his murals on buildings across East LA.

Artwork is the perfect way to bring character into your own home, and is even better when your modern home decor is created by an emerging artist who is able to capture all your emotion and spirit in one single piece. A trip to LA Artwalk to see Vargas is in order for us all.

  • Lego Architecture: Building Blocks for Grownups

    Lego Architecture Dwell Contest

LEGO building blocks have inspired generations of young builders. In recent years, they've also become an object of affection for grown adults looking to indulge their childhood dreams of becoming an architect.

In 2008, LEGO introduced the LEGO Architecture Series, a series of building block sets that replicate some of the world's most iconic structures. Included are a number of modern residences that would be of particular interest to fans of modern design.

There's Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House:

And there's even Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye:

The LEGO design fad has definitely taken hold. Earlier this year in fact, Dwell Magazine and LEGO joined forces to stage a contest in which participants were asked to create a Mid-century Modern home using the blocks (pictured at the top of this post and below).

    Dwell Lego Contest

Put any of these sets together, literally, and you've got the best in mid-century houses. Unfortunately these models aren't large enough to fit our favorite lighting fixtures and furniture. For a real home, we recommend modern black leather chairs, Danish wood tables or credenzas, and any of our favorite arc designer floor lamps.

For a fraction of the cost of real construction, it's fun to fantasize for a moment about building one of the world's most recognizable modernist residences.
