  • Glamping: Glamorous Camping in Renovated Airstream

     revovated Airstream

Interior Designer Rachel Horn and her husband Justin Kreizel combined their skills to renovate this 1969 Airstream. They are now ready for the great outdoors, but more importantly, they can spend their time camping in luxury.

    Moroccan pendants

The interior is just as functional as it is beautiful. The built-in daybed is wrapped in glamorous fabrics and Moroccan accents, making it almost too beautiful to sleep in. The geometric mirrored coffee tables add a touch of glamour to the space.

This table (below) will help you bring modern lines and a little glam into your own home.

    Airstream kitchen

Although this wasn't the typical 10,000 square foot project Horn was used to designing, she didn't treat it any differently and carefully considered all the details.

Mixing modern home decor with Moorish, Turkish or Persian details creates something Horn decribes as "Luxe Nomadic".

    modern compact kitchen

This modern kitchen is equipped with stainless steel appliances, a cappuccino maker, water filter, and all the amenities typically found in a luxurious home kitchen. Horn and her husband have everything they need to be comfortable while camping.

Modern wall light fixtures are great for casting a nice glow onto counters and surfaces below, perfect for cooking those late night meals. Directional wall lights are great for kitchens without upper cabinets. This light (below) would also work perfectly in this type of setting.

    upholstered headboards

The bedroom is separated from the rest of the space with Moorish arches and curtains, tied back for easy access. The headboards mimic the arches of the overall structure and are covered in elegant fabrics. After a long day hiking in the rough outdoors, who wouldn't want to jump into these comfortable beds?

For those of you who shy away from the rough outdoors and don't typically like the idea of camping.... Maybe it's time you give "glamping" a try!

    modern architecture

Often times, modern architecture is nice to look at in the same way that art is, but is it somewhere we want to live? Well, we don't have to resolve this design debate here and now. This super cool home, aka The Balancing Barn, is a hotel!

    mirror tiles

The reflective tiles and unique form are what gives this structure it's art-like quality.

The structure is eye catching from every angle!

The simplicity of this space makes it the perfect getaway spot. Furnishing a room with simple modern seating and wall lights is a great way to keep your modern space minimal.

  • Modern Office Design: Concept Office “Attic” by Vasiliy Butenko

    modern office

Many of us are greatly influenced by our environment and especially our work environment, but there are few modern office designs out there that really inspire you. Office design can do wonders for your productivity, creativity, and overall sense of well-being throughout the work week, but I think that many business owners fail to understand the full impact it has on their employees.

Creating peace of mind in a stressful environment is something that can be hard to do, but the design of your space can really help you achieve this! Vasiliy Butenko did a marvelous job on the design of Concept Office "Attic" by creating a thoughtful plan and a more enjoyable workplace.

    modern library

A central volume within the space houses the workstations and is surrounded by a more comfortable lounge area with exposed vaulted ceilings. The rose colored volume becomes the main feature of this interior and is framed nicely by the natural wood walls and ceiling. Low, modern lounge sofas create a relaxed area perfect for flipping through the stacks of books that line the walls.

The sleek black furniture, warm wood accents, and modern pendant lighting balance nicely with the strong choice of color in the space. An exposed bulb glass pendant light works beautifully in clusters, or it can stand alone. It doesn't clutter the space, but still adds visual interest.

These textured wood walls create a beautiful softness while the pendant lights hang with grace from above. It's a modern environment with a cozy atmosphere that makes employees and clients alike feel like they're at home. Table and floor lamps are sculptural in form, and in this setting they're almost as beautiful as a piece of art.

The concrete bathroom provides full amenities to the employees, making the office feel like an extension of their home. It's a beautiful bathroom in and of itself. In the work environment it's exquisite.

    modern outdoor seating

The outdoor seating provides a great area to relax and take in the ocean views. What an incredible place to let your creative energy flow.

I know that we can't all be this lucky, but I hope your office provides you with a productive and creative environement! Happy Monday and have a great week!

  • Organic Elements in Modern Home Decor

    modern home decor

Mixing organic elements in your modern home decor is the perfect way to create a cozy space. Elements like natural wood tables or sculptural chairs work great with clean solid lines and add layers of interest. This contrasting of materials provides both depth and character to a room, making it feel like a more artful and curated space.

    eclectic living room

The rustic hardwood floor and exposed ceiling beams create an environment that already has character in its soul.  When modern furniture, industrial modern lamps, and accessories are layered over achitectural character, you create a very thoughtful space. The modern, but natural chaise lounge stands in the center of the space like an organic sculpture. Staple elements like these can make any space feel complete, especially with modern black sofas to ground the space.

Natural textures bring life to this neutral interior (above). The textured rugs and rattan pouf fill the space with a softness that the concrete and metal do not provide.

If your modern home decor is feeling a little too cold, warm it up with the use of natrual elements. It's this mixture of natural elements in modern interiors that creates a cozier, lived in feel.

  • Spanish Castles: Modern Hotel Design

    modern hotel design in Spain

Spain may be teetering on the edge of the debt disaster that plagues many of its Mediterranean neighbors, but that doesn't mean the country isn't unveiling a handful of the hottest modern hotel design around. Big name international designers are creating some of the most eye-catching, ultra modern hotels the world has ever seen, proving that the best talent in the world is heading to Spain these days for more than soccer.

The gregarious lobby of the Barcelo Raval in Barcelona (below) is so packed with wow moments that it's a morass of exclamation points - oversized lamp shades, button tufted built-ins, a melange of contemporary plastic seating, and a ceiling full of white decorative pylons. Modern plastic seating is always a great way to add whimsy to any space.

    barcelo raval barcelona contemporary hotel

But step inside and a different story unfolds. Guestrooms are tastefully sparse and elegantly austere, in contrast to the public areas. All told, designers like Jaime Hayon, Marcel Wanders for Mooi, and Vitra have put their touch on the hotel.

Moving on to Puerta America Hotel in Madrid, an architectural abomination on the outside (so much so that I refuse to include a photograph). The vivid hotel is a who's who smorgasbord of international design talent. Twelve designers contributed to the hotel, one for each floor. It's luminous, voluminous, and strikingly beautiful. Worth mentioning first are David Chipperfield's corridors (pictured at the top of this post), low-light stunners that look like they came straight from the latest Dark Knight movie.

zaha hadid designs Puerta America guestrooms

Also of note are the floors by Zaha Hadid (above) and Norman Foster (below). Riffing off their signature contemporary styles, both designers/architects use recessed fluorescent fixtures to soften the angles throughout and give the spaces a round, synthetic glow.

    Norman Foster designed hotel floor

The Caro Hotel in Valencia (below) brings the outdoors in. Literally. Large stone wall remnants grace the dining halls, while gothic arches and Baroque molding detailing reveal the historical elements of the building. The Caro Hotel is an organic mix of old and new, in which filtered daylight softens public spaces and staged lighting warms intimate spaces. I'm particularly struck by how the extremely simplified forms of the seating integrates seemlessly with the organic and ornate surroundings.

Don't fret that summer is ending and you'll miss the boat on these hotels... Spain is open year round for visitors. And if a European tour isn't in your immediate plans, you can always consider redecorating your living room or bedroom and add a little edge to your daily life. Just make sure to include a bottle of Tempranillo and a nice wedge of Manchego and you've got yourself your very own Spanish retreat.
