It's that time of year again! Get ready to spend more time in your modern outdoor space, both day and night. There's just a few things you need to consider as you prepare your outdoor space.
The first thing you should do before selecting outdoor lighting, purchasing outdoor furniture or laying down any stones is figure out how you want your outdoor space to function. Will you be entertaining? Do you want to eat out there during the day or night? Maybe you just want to lounge on sunny days?
Keep in mind the style of both your home's architecture as well as the interior design. Selecting furniture and lighting that will compliment your home's style is important for the overall flow of the design.
It's important to include some plant life in your home, but it's especially important to include it in your outdoor living space! Greenery can be used as a barrier as well. In the case of this home below, close quarters required them to come up with a design plan to ensure privacy. They chose tall, narrow trees and it was a brilliant move.
We hope you have fun designing your modern outdoor space and even more fun spending time there!

Palihouse has taken its modern brand to the beach and I can’t wait to see the full hotel design when it opens this summer. Palihouse Santa Monica is a 36-room beach lodge in a Spanish Colonial Revival-style building, which has been deemed a historic landmark by the City of Santa Monica.
At Palihouse Santa Monica, tastemakers and world travelers now have the chance to stay in a residential style dwelling without have to compromise on location, style, or amenities. This prime location is the perfect hybrid of boutique hotel and luxury residence that is sure to be an experience in itself.
We’ve only gotten a quick peek into the rooms but I can tell this place is going to be great. The mixture of modern elements, pattern, and bold pops of color combine to create a room full of interest. Modern table lamps are always a great way to define the character in a room. When you feel like a change swapping out your table lamps can make your room take on a whole new feeling.

The original vanity was given a fresh coat of beautiful French gray paint and bright new porcelain knobs. Mixing the industrial barstool, cork flooring and modern wallpaper with this vintage element creates a timeless look.
The vintage wall sconce is like the cherry on top of this beautiful vanity. Modern wall sconces add so much character into your room and picking on that is unexpected will give your modern bathroom or modern vanity that wow factor.

The bold stripes repeat throughout the space and are strikingly dramatic against the light wood table.

I’m ready to sit down in the new Palihouse Santa Monica and daydream about world travels and life experiences while sipping a hot cup of tea. It’s this combination of old and new that will give you a nostalgic feeling and something to write home about.

My favorite homes are designed so that adults and kids can co-exist happily in stylish, shared spaces. The kind of homes where the kids room design involves beds made up with beautiful bedding, yet still jumped on often.
A lot of people are under the assumption that great design and kids don’t mix. There is an unspoken rule that when you have children you must shelf your sense of style and surrender to the plastic toys that be, by kid proofing your personal taste. Not true!
It took me a little while to debunk this myth. But, I’ve learned the art of creating a space that is inviting to both big and little people a like. It’s not a mystery, and in fact, it is an easily learned skill.
There really isn’t much that has to be altered as far your design atheistic goes. Yes, you may have to baby proof for a short season or pick a fabric that cleans up easily, but what it really requires is just a bit of adding in.
Take this shared bedroom (below) as an example. It’s modern and stylish in every sense of the word, and surely pleasing to anyone’s grown up taste. Yet, the first thing a kid would notice about this room is the cool drapes that hide the beds.
To the adults, perhaps, it is a solution to creating some privacy in a shared room. But to the child, it is a fort, a castle, and a secret place of escape (and the envy of all of their friends). The other thing that stands out in this room, and is a pleaser to both parties, is the brightly colored modern pendant light. It is one simple, well designed, element that makes the room. Again, the design is adult worthy and the color is kid happy.
Here are a few of my favorite pieces that add a modern and element into any space:
Hayden Marble Side Table, Pinguino Green and White Accent Lamp, Pascal White Plastic Wood Side Chair, Uno Black Owl Down Throw Pillow
Another way to “add in” is with accessories. You can easily add in a playful pillow or piece of art for a bit of fun and interest. Even tables that have a fun shape are loved equally among all ages. The room above is a great example of just making a few small additions that make all the difference.
So, no need to say goodbye to your style, nor be too stuffy or serious, just add in a bit of fun and imagination and everyone lives happily ever after.

Bookshelves can be a great feature in any room. They’re an opportunity to showcase your interests and personality through books, art and curated items from traveling. There are times you can also run the risk of having storage units look cluttered and they end up being a catch-all.
Some may think it’s a little daunting to style items or objects in plain sight. However, you’ll be amazed how easily you can turn your own bookshelf into a fabulous focal point by following four simple steps.
1. Books: Mix it up – instead of going vertical, stack books horizontally. It will create a graphic feel and alternating stacks between vertical and horizontal can create a more relaxed look.
2. Incorporating Art: Having framed artwork adds another element to your bookcase. They can be propped up on shelves or can be leaned to create a layered effect.
3. Vary Scale and Height: Rather than simply lining items up on a bookshelf, try to create small groupings that combine similar items in different sizes, colors and textures.
4. Creating Vignettes: When you're looking at your bookshelf try to create little moments with items – a bowl of treasures or necklaces, a grouping of vases, layering art, stacking books with a few items on top. Imagine if someone was taking a photo of that little grouping and if it would look good.

Reid White Shelving Unit or Media Stand, Zuo Mission Bay 6-Level Distressed Natural Shelf
I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite bookshelves for you to place in any room so that you can create your very own beautiful bookshelf. If you’re looking for a place for extra storage – a bookshelf does the trick, but in a stylish way.

As lovers of interior design, we believe in one thing... We are all entitled to a designer look no matter what our budget is. If you include designer pieces, even just one, it will automatically upgrade your space.
This modern dining room (above) is well curated and every detail is accounted for, including a beautiful gallery wall. However, without the Zuo Transparent Dining Chairs this space might not catch your eye. The simple, transparent seating addition makes all the difference. They are the perfect balance to all the other colors and textures in that room.
The living room above is very well designed and perfectly balanced. For any well designed room, lighting is so important, both natural and artificial. But it's not just the light emitted that's important, it's the style of the light.
The Jonathan Adler Ventana Floor Lamp has the perfect form, texture, color and height to compliment the design of the room. Modern floor lamps, like plants and flowers are a great way to add vertical style to a space.
Often times, designer products provide seamless design. They can make a large impact on your space without dominating the design. The Possini Euro White Flower Pendant above is the perfect addition to this simple, white dining room. Without that fun, designer pendant the dining room would be quite average.
This pink Robert Abbey Pink Gourd Table Lamp above provides a fun color pop in this stylish bedroom. Designer products often provide that small but necessary detail that is necessary for completing a stylish space.

You don't need a large budget or a room full of high-end designer products to have a stylish home. All you need are a couple details and a few great products at reasonable prices.
