    Crystal Chandelier

Crystal chandeliers have been a thing of the past, are a thing of the present and I think will easily be a thing of the future. A chandelier is such a classic piece when paired with a modern space, beauty happens!

I remember starting a few years back, everyone wanted a crystal chandelier. Mostly to decorate their entryway, child’s room, dining room and even laundry room with. The key is mixing the chandelier with the right ambience. The space that you can make the biggest impact with is the dining space. Above we see a very rustic dining space decorated with a large, dainty chandelier. There's contrast so it works!

Now this room gives me goose-bumps! The art collection alone is stunning. Throw in modern furniture and add that magnificent chandelier and you’ve created a picture perfect space. I’m sure at night, the chandelier gives off quite the twinkle lights.

Here is another rustic space, prettified with a crystal chandelier. This time the owner went with more of a brass look, which I appreciate next to all of those warm wood tones. It also pops against an all white room, along with the art.

    Here's a couple pretty options.

  • Creating a Modern Home with Accessories

    Modern Living Room

When it comes to decorating, larger scale pieces seem to be the favorite.  They add drama, fill up spaces and give the feeling that you get what you paid for.   But, I think it’s the little things that really make the space.

The little things are the very details that make a house a home.  They are the pieces that hold our memories and add a finishing touch.  And although these accessory pieces may be small in size or stature, they are often the very things that tell a big story.  After all, isn’t it the accessories that make an outfit?  The same concept goes for decorating a space. A crystal candelabra on a mantle works the same as sparkly chandelier earrings do to an outfit.

    Modern Accessories

Small Glacier Glass White Vase, Fuller Clear Glass Document Box, Clear Crystal Taper Candle Holder, Nambe Movie Vertical Glass Photo Frame, Dark Smoke Hand-Blown Glass Bottle Vase

The great thing about accessories is that they can be added as a finishing touch or they can be the very thing to build an entire room around.  Little things are often picked up on a whim while shopping, but they can also be items that are well thought out and planned for.  I like to use accessories that not only look pretty also have meaning or serve a purpose.

A few ideas for accessories are:

    • A frame that holds a photo of a loved one or one of your most cherished days

    • A bowl that holds seashells from a favorite vacation

    • A candle holder which lights up the room

    • A box or tray that gathers and collects favorite or special objects

    • A vase filled with flowers (either received or bought by yourself to brighten your day and your space)

After all, it’s the little things that hold our memories and make our homes a place in which to create new ones.

  • Of Monsters And Men: Living Room Design

     Album Cover

Of Monsters And Men is group of five daydreamers from Iceland whose dreams actually came true!  Their music is uplifting and creates that perfect sound that makes you want to run around and sing at the top of your lungs!  With Coachella Music Festival coming up this weekend, they are one of the many bands I am excited to see!  I'm sure you all have heard their #1 song Little Talks off their latest album My Head Is An Animal and you can watch the video below just in case you're not sure!

If you were to translate this song into a living room design, it would be modern and eclectic. You would find brass lamps, seashell side tables, driftwood consoles, and of course some modern binoculars! It's all about exploration and discovery and the amazing times you spent running around as a child discovering nature from a innocent perspective.

The collection of objects seem as if you found them on the beach, in the mountains, or forest during your childhood discoveries and is mixed with current modern elements. A simple modern sofa is a great grounding element for eclectic design and allows the shape and texture of the other elements to stand out like sculptural art. The feeling is rich like the instruments behind the smooth voice of lead singer Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir in Of Monster And Men.

     Inspirational Quote

These lyrics are perfect and I hope if you get the chance to check them out at Coachella you do.  And most importantly, I hope you get to play outside like when you were young, full of life and full of love!

  • Color Combo: Modern Design With Pink + Gray

    Modern Living Room

I adore this modern design! The gray with the various shades of pinks and patterns is kind of fantastic. I especially love the mix of styles, very eclectic and chic!

I love the mid-century style of this chair (below), and unlike a lot of mid-century furniture, it actually looks comfortable! A pink lamp would be perfect along side it. I think any one of these would look amazing in any given space with this chair. The shade of the pink lamps goes just perfectly with the gray chair and they are both solid colors so they are easy to dress up even more.

    1. Rose Apothocary Table Lamp 2. Pink Robert Abbey Lamp 3. Roso Ovo Table Lamp

The problem is, which to choose? The first lamp has a really interesting shape but is simple enough I think it would be just enough to add character to the room.

The second lamp is right up my alley. The faceted look is so trendy and cool and I love it! But again, it is simple enough I think it would work really well with the chair and the room they would both go in.

Now for option number three. This lamp is pretty and simple. I think it could look fantastic with some decorative bowls or vintage items around it. And the chair, you could dress it up with a throw or a pillow or two.

The options are endless! But the real question is, which lamp goes best with your style?! All three lamps have a similar color and aesthetic, but the final decision lies with you...

  • Modern Design Elements For a Great Playroom

    Modern Design

Remember when a playroom was just a room filled with big, brightly colored plastic toys and lacking any modern design element? Certainly that is not the case these days. Today playrooms are nothing short of stylish and are rooms that fit seamlessly into beautifully decorated homes.

If you break down the design elements of a great playroom then I think it comes down to three things:  Function, Fun (quirk) and Style.

    Modern Storage

This playroom (above) is a great example in that there is great storage (function) with quirky masks on display and ready for play (fun). It also has modern furniture, which lends style to the space.

    Modern Playroom

To keep the room stylish and appealing to adults try using stylish rugs, contemporary light fixtures, modern seating and storage. The great thing about using these types of pieces is that they can easily be used in other rooms when your little ones out grow a playroom or if you just like to change things around.

And don’t assume that playrooms have to be banished to the basement or bonus room. I turned my dining room (below) into a playroom for the time being. When the time comes to give the room it’s original purpose back it’s an easy switch.

    Modern Dining Room

So go ahead and use those grown up looking chairs and that modern light fixture that you’ve been admiring.  Just mix in some playful art, functional storage and your child’s favorite toys, and you’ll have a playroom that everyone can enjoy.
