  • Modern Chandelier Meets Art Installation

    wood chandelier

Today's modern chandelier often times double as an art installation. Is this good or bad? Well, how can art ever be bad? As long as you understand how to translate these designs to work in your own home, then you're able to enjoy them as the inspiration that they are.

This innovative creation (above), designed by Elisa Strozyk, is made out of small triangles of wood. Where you would normally see wood used only as a flat surface in product design, this chandelier can be bent and shaped however you like, far from a flat surface.

Innovative product design is similar to the fashion runway... Would you necessarily wear that? Similarly, would you ever put that in your home (above)? However, you can use the materials, colors and form as inspiration for selecting a modern chandelier. Also, the way it relates to the space can be a form of inspiration as well.

One very simple way to achieve these lighting-meets-art look is to go with an over sized fixtures (above two images), but keep the materials simple. Proportions can definitely be played with to make a statement in any room.

Another way to turn your modern lighting into art is to keep the furnishings and decor around it simple (above). Allow your modern chandelier, big or small to stand out.

Here's a few fun ideas for unconventional chandeliers that will surely make a statement in your home.

    1. Fredrick Ramond Mondo Chandelier, 2. Maxim Chantilly Nickel Jewelry Chain Chandelier, 3. Possini Glass Orbs Pendant Chandelier, 4. Possini Corinthian Bronze Twist Chandelier, 5. Vienna Full Spectrum Chrome and Crystal Chandelier

Don't limit your sources for inspiration, just because certain products won't fit in your home (or budget), doesn't mean you can't pull ideas from them. Designing is about solving problems so there's always a way to achieve the look you want!

    Moden Architecture

    Image from Remodelista

Whether it's architecture or interiors, we're not alone in our love for the boldness of black. This risky, bold color can be found everywhere nowadays. The perfect partner for this hue is gold!

Keep in mind, gold doesn't have to mean a metallic material.... Take a look at the image above, even the glow from modern pendant lighting and the wood furniture provides a gold element to the space. It softens the boldness of the black architecture.

Like the architecture above, this bold room is dramatic and chic. The gold, found in the lamp and the wood tones, soften it up a bit and make I the perfect space for rest.

Here's some ideas for incorporating this dark color into your modern home.

  • Creative Office Spaces: From Modern to Vintage

    Creative Office Space

The best office spaces are those that are creative and can tell a story. My desk was built by my husband. He built 2 sawhorses and then took an old counter from a boutique closing in the area, and attached it to the top. It’s the BEST.

Another key ingredient to a great office space is of course good lighting. Pendant lights are stylish, while attractive task lamps are necessary. And both is even better, like the modern office space above.

    Small Office Space

This vintage office space (above) has a lot of character. It’s not big in size and fits perfectly in that room. If you're looking for a desk that just needs to house your laptop, this is a great size for you. I also love the art gallery above the desk. It creates a fabulous corner to work in.

    Modern Vintage

This rustic office space (above) must have a fantastic story! The wood looks reclaimed or possibly older than me. It creates a very organic look. And I love that this whole work space does not feel stuffy nor too serious. They did a great job mixing materials and textures to give the space a lived in but very stylish look. Modern black table lamps are great for adding contrast to a neutral space.

    Stylish Work Space

Graphic designer Cassie Pyle needed a stylish space to work in, and I think she created just that. The walnut desk is a good size for a small space and it also offers plenty of storage. I like how she paired the filing cabinet next to the desk for even more storage. The muted tones throughout this space work well together! And even if you use a stylish pendant light, don't rule out a modern wall sconce. As you can see, they compliment each other perfectly.

Remember, when designing your office space, the sky is the limit. Think outside of the box and you’ll create a masterpiece.

  • Modern Bedrooms: Small Spaces with Big Style

    Small Modern Bedroom

When we moved in to our current home, the first detail we noticed was that our modern bedroom was quite a bit smaller than our previous home. It wasn't a huge deal because we had already downsized our belongings. But I still wanted the space to look spacious and bright. To do this in any space, all you need to do is keep with a bright white scheme.

This calls for a pretty white on the walls. The great thing about white paint is that you can pair it with any color that you’d like. When painting with color, it binds you to that specific color scheme. The bedroom above started with white walls and then added a fun yellow stripe down the wall and into the floors.

    Small Bedroom

Another detail to remember when working with a small bedroom space is white bedding makes everything better. Well, maybe not literally but it sure makes for a sophisticated yet playful bedroom. One of my favorite things about hotels is the pretty crisp white bedding that you crawl into every night. You can have that same feel in your own space. I also like the way hotels are using hanging pendant lights in their bedroom designs. The room above is a great example of both elements.

    Modern Bedroom

A modern color scheme that is timeless is the classic black and white duo. It can be left alone or can be added onto with other colors. Again, the white makes everything seem more open and the black just adds some drama to a stark space. This bedroom shown above is a perfect example of black and white done right. Another way to achieve this look is by adding contemporary black lighting fixtures to an all white room.

  • Home Decor to Match Our Summer Playlist

    Rush Midnight Decor

Crossover between creative fields is inevitable. Music influences film, which influences fashion, which influences home design and decor. It's not always obvious and it's not always literal, but as we move forward culturally, we carry creative influences into every corner of our little worlds.

Looking at what's breaking this summer in music, we've noticed that the vibe is a throwback to vintage mod and new wave...and we can't help but wonder how that will cross over into contemporary design.

First, let's start with our summer playlist:

    Rush Midnight (pictured above):

If a lovechild between Billy Ocean and Haircut 100 was actually possible, dance-inducing pleasure popsters Rush Midnight would be it. Enough said. Too much said, really.

    Savages:

    Savages Silence Yourself

Bratty and brash, Savages wrap the post-punk energy of Patti Smith into a well-coiffed, contemporary package.

    Deer Hunter:

    Deerhunter Monomania

Washy and atmospheric indie rockers Deerhunter have always been good for summer lazing and listening, yet their most recent and raucous record, Monomania, is a much more assertive soundtrack, perfect for a lively and well-lived summer season.

    Haim:

Haim Don't Save MeThree sisters from the Valley in Los Angeles, the women in Haim were born and bred to be the pop stars they are. Their hit "Don't Save Me" is a throaty John Waite-esque anthem chronicling the heart's desire for co-dependence and the independent spirit's need to rebel against it.

    The National:

    National Trouble Will Find Me

Everything cools down at some time or another (even hot summer days) and The National have been providing that soundtrack for years. Poetic, measured, a touch dark and, as always, hum-along-able.

Now let's look at a handful of like-minded designs:

    Music Inspired Decor

Clockwise from upper left: Tech Lighting Silver Glaze Aqua Glass Satin Nickel Pendant, Tech Lighting Fire Satin Nickel Cobalt Glass Mini Pendant, Possini Euro Darby Red Glass Pendant Light, Set of 2 Wishbone Y Natural Wood Side Chairs, Howard Elliott Z Mirrored Accent Table

Colored glass pendants are easy to match the vibe of your summer playlist. Mirrored accent tables and furniture definitely capture the mod mood. But is there really a correlation between music and design? Does one influence the other, or are they both just players in a greater cultural trajectory? We're not sure, but one thing's for certain: 2013 promise to be yet another good looking and listening summer.
