Remember when a playroom was just a room filled with big, brightly colored plastic toys and lacking any modern design element? Certainly that is not the case these days. Today playrooms are nothing short of stylish and are rooms that fit seamlessly into beautifully decorated homes.
If you break down the design elements of a great playroom then I think it comes down to three things: Function, Fun (quirk) and Style.
This playroom (above) is a great example in that there is great storage (function) with quirky masks on display and ready for play (fun). It also has modern furniture, which lends style to the space.
To keep the room stylish and appealing to adults try using stylish rugs, contemporary light fixtures, modern seating and storage. The great thing about using these types of pieces is that they can easily be used in other rooms when your little ones out grow a playroom or if you just like to change things around.
And don’t assume that playrooms have to be banished to the basement or bonus room. I turned my dining room (below) into a playroom for the time being. When the time comes to give the room it’s original purpose back it’s an easy switch.
So go ahead and use those grown up looking chairs and that modern light fixture that you’ve been admiring. Just mix in some playful art, functional storage and your child’s favorite toys, and you’ll have a playroom that everyone can enjoy.

Smooth and comfortable. Crisp and clean. Accented here and there. Ms. Feminine & Polished is all that and more!
Contemporary look, geometric base, polished metal. This Geometric Tempered Glass End Table is the perfect shape and size to migrate from room to room when our girl wants to try something new and mix things up.
Lighting doesn't get much more feminine and polished than the White Billowing Cloud Possini Euro Pendant Chandelier! Curved panels, diffused light, sigh. It makes quite the stunning statement in her entry or over the dining table.
Ms. Feminine & Polished likes her rooms well-lit with a little sparkle, and this Hammered Metal Cylinder Silver Leaf Table Lamp fits the bill perfectly. Its shimmering tapered base reflects all of the lovely light the lamp casts.
The Antique Brass Halogen Double Pharmacy Holtkoetter Floor Lamp offers a special touch for a favorite nook in her home. Contemporary and stylish, the adjustable arms are dimmable to create quite the mood.
Our Ms. Feminine & Polished knows that the outdoors are an extension of her space, and lighting is equally important! A few of these sleek Tao Steel Modern Troy Outdoor Wall Lights give her porch and patio a glow like no other, while the frosted rippled glass gives a touch of ladylike class.

Frank Gehry is onto something again as he tries to bring a major museum into the City of Santa Monica. His proposed project is a mixed use structure with a 125-room hotel, condos, a museum, shopping, restaurants and of course parking. Santa Monica could use a little bit of excitement and who better to bring it than the Santa Monica native Frank Gehry? I can just see the modern furniture and stylish modern lighting filling the spaces and the streets lined with modern architecture and sculptures.
One of the amazing things that Frank Gehry does is mix architecture, art and culture into one. His projects are a destination waiting to be explored. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (above) is the largest museum in a series of cultural institutions planned as part of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District. It will serve the world as a destination for the advancement of knowledge and the understanding of culture through the arts.
The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (above) is scheduled for completion in 2017 and it will no doubt be a pleasure for the now 84 old Frank Gehry to see such a remarkable project completed.
Gehry has designed more than fifty commercial buildings and residences throughout the world, including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the Disney Concert Hall (above), the Los Angeles Children’s Museum, the California Aerospace Museum and the Yale Psychiatric Institute just to name a few.
He also renovated the famous Hollywood Bowl by adding fiberglass spheres which hang from the bowl’s shell to upgrade the sound of the acoustics.
And did you know he has also designed a series of modern pendant lighting called "Cloud" (above). The name evokes the poetic nature of these creations, which should convey the feeling of freedom and eccentricity.
Who doesn't want to add a feeling of freedom and eccentricity into their home? One of the best ways to do that is through modern lighting, whether it be a ceiling light or a pendant! Take a look at some of our suggestions below.

Now we can all bring a little bit of Frank Gehry into our homes or office.

Cheeky and fun, that's what Ms. Light & Airy is all about! The rising temperatures have her ecstatic to freshen up her space and her wardrobe, like with this Floral Sheath Dress from A-Thread.
A few of these Cosmo Mirrored Candle Wall Sconces placed strategically along her hallway or in the bath make everything feel bigger with their reflective surfaces, whether or not the candles are lit. Ms. Light & Airy has this Cirrus Gloss White Ceiling Fan in her living room to keep the space feeling fresh, it's clean lines and white finish help it almost disappear against a white ceiling!
Placing this Hand-Blown blue Bubble Glass Table Lamp in her entryway or at the end of a hall not only helps subtly offer some color, it also manages to be a statement accessory without feeling big and heavy. The materials of the Eileen Grey Chrome and Glass Accent Table keep it feeling just like Ms. Light & Airy, bright and clean. It would feel equally at home next to a chair in the living room or as a bedside table.
A set of these wide, comfy Zuo Whitworth Chrome White Modern Accent Chairs would help to make a little reading nook feel much bigger than it actually is. Ms. Light & Airy loves the open form and clean lines!
It's that time of year again! Get ready to spend more time in your modern outdoor space, both day and night. There's just a few things you need to consider as you prepare your outdoor space.
The first thing you should do before selecting outdoor lighting, purchasing outdoor furniture or laying down any stones is figure out how you want your outdoor space to function. Will you be entertaining? Do you want to eat out there during the day or night? Maybe you just want to lounge on sunny days?
Keep in mind the style of both your home's architecture as well as the interior design. Selecting furniture and lighting that will compliment your home's style is important for the overall flow of the design.
It's important to include some plant life in your home, but it's especially important to include it in your outdoor living space! Greenery can be used as a barrier as well. In the case of this home below, close quarters required them to come up with a design plan to ensure privacy. They chose tall, narrow trees and it was a brilliant move.
We hope you have fun designing your modern outdoor space and even more fun spending time there!
