Design and Architecture at Pacific Standard Time

Pacific Standard Time, the art phenomenon that took Southern California by storm in 2011-2102 (with shows and events at more than 60 museums, galleries and other institutions) is back from now until July with something for fans of design and architecture: "Pacific Standard Time presents Modern Architecture in L.A.

Shoreline House by Smith and Williams

There are two exhibitions in particular that should appeal to mid-century design lovers, chronicling the modernist aspirations that defined post-war Los Angeles. Featuring beautiful home photography and renderings, they promise to hold plenty of eye candy. But they're equally rich on substance too.

The first of the two is The Architecture of Smith and Williams at the UC Santa Barbara Art, Design & Architecture Museum. Drawing on the museum's rich archives of modernist designs by partners Whitney R. Smith and Wayne R. Williams, this exhibition focuses on the firm's pragmatic ability to site buildings beautifully within a landscape, such as the Shoreline House pictured as both sketch and photograph above.

The second exhibition, Technology and Environment: The Postwar House in Southern California at Cal Poly Pomona (pictured above and below) flexes that institution's muscle in architecture and engineering, saluting innovations in construction technology and the iconic designs made possible by them. As with most modern homes, large planes of glass blur the line between indoors and out while the structural use of steel usurps traditional building patterns.

    Modernist Kappe House

All told, exhibitions, screenings, tours and talks will take place at seventeen area locations for "Modern Architecture in L.A." As is often the case with historical survey exhibitions, there will inevitably be a plethora of vintage furniture worth salivating over. We particularly love how smooth spherical hanging pendant lights and wall lamps play well in otherwise rectangular spaces.

"Modern Architecture in L.A." offers a lot for the design fan and yours truly will try to hit every single event. At the very least, you can expect to see me at the downtown L.A. skyline tour hosted by the L.A. Conservancy. Multiple times.

  • Designing With Crystal Chandeliers

    Crystal Chandelier

Crystal chandeliers have been a thing of the past, are a thing of the present and I think will easily be a thing of the future. A chandelier is such a classic piece when paired with a modern space, beauty happens!

I remember starting a few years back, everyone wanted a crystal chandelier. Mostly to decorate their entryway, child’s room, dining room and even laundry room with. The key is mixing the chandelier with the right ambience. The space that you can make the biggest impact with is the dining space. Above we see a very rustic dining space decorated with a large, dainty chandelier. There's contrast so it works!

    Rustic Dining Room

Now this room gives me goose-bumps! The art collection alone is stunning. Throw in modern furniture and add that magnificent chandelier and you’ve created a picture perfect space. I’m sure at night, the chandelier gives off quite the twinkle lights.

    Modern Living Room

Here is another rustic space, prettified with a crystal chandelier. This time the owner went with more of a brass look, which I appreciate next to all of those warm wood tones. It also pops against an all white room, along with the art.

    Here's a couple pretty options.

  • Get the Look: Kitchen Nook Lighting

    Modern Kitchen Nook

It doesn’t take much to make a kitchen nook feel warm and inviting, but the lighting might be the most important element.

These adorable kitchen niches are usually small in scale, only being about to fit a small table. Yet, they maximize space by turning an awkward alcove into something useful.  I remember using mine in my childhood home growing up to do projects and homework while my mom cooked dinner. Plus, there is something so peaceful about waking up and going to the kitchen to enjoy a warm up of coffee in your sunny nook.

Need more inspiration? I've rounded up three breakfast nooks that I absolutely adore and paired lighting that you can get for your own kitchen nook.

If you don’t have a built-in nook in your kitchen (I certainly don’t, living in San Francisco), try to make one for yourself by adding a small table in a sunny corner of your living room or another empty spot in your home.

I currently use our bay window to achieve a “sitting area” feel and it’s my happy place to sit and enjoy myself.

  • The Bistrot: Restaurant Design Lights Up Bali

    The Bistrot

The Bistrot, a vintage Parisian restaurant design with industrial glam influences, is all the buzz right now in Bali!   The imaginations of design team Zohra Boukhari and her husband Blaise Samoy created something that is powerfully stunning, simply elegant and a perfect mix of industrial and glamorous.

    Bar Design

The modern chandeliers and industrial pendant lights hang from the ceiling  like a large art installation. Adding a modern crystal chandelier to your industrial space is a great way to add contrast. Boukhari has a way with materials. The aged finish on this bar warms up the place drastically and allows the new millwork to blend seamlessly with the existing architecture.

    Rustic Design

Pops of glam are really what make this industrial space unique. It's been carefully curated with beautiful furnishings, antiques and artifacts from around the Indonesian region, and mainly from the owners’ private collection.

    Brick Walls

And eclectic selection of table lamps are displayed on the wall like an art installation. How great is that?! See, a great table lamp can be used for anything!

    Accessories

Each element in the space looks as if it has it's own story to tell. The warmth and character in The Bistrot gives off a magical feeling and I'm sure the food is as magical as the interior. How does " Grilled Blood Sausage with Caramelized Pear or Citrus Cured Salmon with Watermelon and Herbed Feta" sound?  Now we've all got one more reason to visit Bali, not that we need one!

  • Stylish Family Outdoor Living

    Outdoor Living

Now that warmer weather has finally arrived, so has the ritual of spending hours upon hours outside. In fact, families today don’t just go outdoors to play, they create stylish outdoor living.

    Backyard Movie

I love the concept of outdoor living (especially since its only 3 three short months for me). Things like eating meals, cozying up on a couch with a good book and even watching a movie outside are family favorites.

    Tepee

Creating a space to have these memorable and relaxing outdoor moments is fun. I love the bohemian look pictured above. There is cozy seating for adults which blends naturally and beautifully with the tepee for kids to hide out in (talk about fun).

    Modern Outdoors

If you are looking to create some ambiance or spruce up your outdoor dining space why not add modern lighting? You can always use outdoor lights but using lights intended for inside adds an unexpected element and makes the space all the more special.

    Kids Outdoors

Don’t forget to add seating for the little ones.  Although there are many options for great outdoor furniture these days, using regular play chairs (pictured above) is charming. Little ones love anything that comes in their size.

So grab a few things from inside to take outside, add some lighting and cozy seating, get the grill going and have a happy and stylish summer!
