     Industrial Designer Karim Rashid

    Name:                 Karim Rashid

    Age:                     52

    Occupation:       Iconic Modern Designer

    Born:                   Cairo, Egypt

Education:         Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada

Karim is one of the most prolific designers of our time, with over 3000 designs. His designs span the creative medium from product design to fashion. Karim's designs are easy to recognize and are known for their bright and bold color schemes. His work has gained such acclaimation from the design community that it can be found in 14 museums worldwide. Some of his popular product designs include his lamps for George Kovacs, trash cans for Umbra, water bottles for Bobble, USA, and post-it holders for 3M.

If you have visited Las Vegas recently you might have seen his design of the Silk Road restaurant in the City Center. It is no surprise that Miami fell in love with Karim Rashid's designs. The Mybrickell Condos in Miami definitely represent Karim's colorful and playful style. Karim fits right into the fashion scene with his unique watch designs for Alessi, funky rain boots for Sydney D. Japan, and Heart Pendant necklace for Georg Jensen, Denmark.

It is no doubt that I too am a huge Karim Rashid fan. I love that we carry a few of his table lamps that he designed for George Kovacs. Below are my favorite picks.

    Dining Room Style

Arc lamps look great in modern living rooms, there's no question about that. However, the dining room is an unexpected room where designer floor lamps, specifically arc lamps look great!

This cool loft home above features an arc lamp which functions as great lighting of course, but also contributes to the mid-century style of the dining room.

    Modern Dining Room

While this space above is a bit more contemporary than the first image, there is still an undertone of mid-century style, which makes this marble-base arc lamp a perfect choice.

    Kitchen Design

Floor lamps are great in the dining room for when you don't want to disturb your ceiling. If you have gorgeous wood ceilings like this space above, no need to drill a hole and install an electrical system, just plug in a handsome floor lamp!

  • Modern Office Blueprint

    Modern Office

You've probably heard it a million times, but the way you design your office space really does have an impact on how you work. You decide whether it's a positive or negative impact by how functional and how much the style agrees with your personality.

We decided to help you out and feature one office that we think is pretty cool, and in case you agree, we're providing a little blueprint so you can get a similar look at your home.

The designer used space very well, while at the same time keeping the design minimal, and uncluttered. For example, instead of using up desk space for a task lamp, hanging pendant lights are a great option. Consequently, the modern desk has a good amount of surface space, plus storage!

    Office Furnishings

This white pendant light is the perfect addition to any modern space where you want to save surface area.

Flowers brighten the vibe in any room, and bonus these are faux so no stress involved!

This desk is sturdy, modern and best of all, it has lots of storage so the surface can stay clean.

You don't need to choose an office chair if you want something a little more stylish, this dining room chair would work perfectly and look great too.

Remember to keep a picture frame with the ones you love nearby to help motivate your work.

  • The Malibu Colony: Where Beautiful Design Meets the Pacific

    Coastline in Malibu

This colorful illustration depicts the most exclusive community in Malibu, California - The Malibu Colony. Centrally located, near shops and restaurants, The Colony is a gated community in Malibu which is home to many Hollywood celebrities and executives. It was one of the first areas inhabited after Malibu became open to the public in 1929. Carpenters from Hollywood studios were hired to build cottages for celebrities, like Bing Crosby and Gary Cooper. At that time, this area was called "Malibu Beach Motion Picture Colony." Today, there are about 120 homes within this famous gated community, 80 of which are located right on the beach.

Designed and built to benefit from breathtaking ocean views, these pricey homes are unique in both their architecture and their interior design. One thing is consistent though, the coastal scenery is like something straight out of the movies.

Living at the Beach and Living Room Design

Beautifully designed, this space is accented perfectly to incorporate the seaside color palette. The silver table lamps and blue glass vases bring a little bit of the outdoors in. The clean white furniture and white walls keep the space simple and clean, allowing the magnificent view to take center stage.

    Beach Home and White Furniture

This super modern home has a low vaulted ceiling that guides your eyes toward the ocean and straight to the large window that practically doubles as artwork. The minimal decor and linear furniture help keep the space open and fresh.

Mid-Century Modern Design and Beach House

This Mid-Century Modern style decor pairs perfectly with the architecture and wood-paneled ceiling. Magnificently designed with an entire wall of windows, it's no wonder this resident has plenty of seating in the living room.

Organic Living Room Design and Beach House

Perfect for entertaining, this open living room has no shortage of windows. Minimal furniture, including super chic bar stools keep the space simple, allowing the view to be the focal point of this space.

There's no question, architecture must take into account its surroundings and it seems to be even more important when designing a home in Malibu. Each and every one of these homes has an incredible amount of windows, with most of them taking up the entire wall. What makes these homes so special is that even with such huge open windows, due to the exclusivity of this neighborhood, the homes remain private to those lucky few who are able to wake up each morning and have a cup of coffee while curling their toes in the sand.

  • Modern Island Retreat Integrates Seamlessly with Landscape

Modern Architecture with Canopy and Glass Window Wall

What isn't there to love about this beautiful island retreat located on the New Zealand Island of Waiheke? This home designed by Fearon Hay Architects with interiors by Penny Hay takes my breath and my words away. New Zealand is one of the most picturesque places in the world, so being able to capture the 360 degree views from your living room is a true luxury. Innovative architecture joins interior and exterior spaces through the use of canopy-like structures tensioned to the surrounding landscape. Although the architecture is rather harsh in its elements, the surrounding landscape becomes completely integrated with the architecture and the interior creating warmth and harmony.

Sunken Living Room Sofa Fireplace and Ocean View

The sunken sofa lies low so you don't miss an inch of the view. The lighting remains as flush as can be although  track lights are a must here. This is a great solution for any home that does not have the space for recessed lighting. I'd be cozying on up in this little sunken haven and just enjoying what is!

Raw Walnut Dining Table with Metal Chairs

Natural wood elements of the table mix nicely with the low soft leather sofa, metal chairs, and concrete floors creating a seamless flow with the gorgeous surroundings.

Stainless Steel and Gray Oak Kitchen with Natural Stone Countertop

Can't you just imagine whipping up an incredible meal in this stunning kitchen.  I'd write my menu and wine list right there on that chalkboard wall and cook up a meal with ease.  What a perfect combination of elements!  I love a decorative light over an island, so if I wanted to get playful I would swap out one of the standard fixtures with this glass monorail pendant.

Open plan modern master bathroom suite with freestanding steel soaking tub

    Ladder Storage in Bathroom

Basic necessities and functional elements have been met with solutions as unique as their surroundings. The idea of keeping things out in the open and revealing their true beauty continues into this open bathroom plan.

Raw wood headboard and natural linens

I hear someone calling for a side table in this room!  I think this concrete looking Fiberclay Ottoman is the perfect match!

    Architecture and Landscape

Invite me over to stay...I don't mind bringing a tent and camping in the yard! Our canopy-like structures can meet with open arms!

I look forward to more work from Fearon Hay and Penny Hay in 2012!
