  • The Malibu Colony: Where Beautiful Design Meets the Pacific

    Coastline in Malibu

This colorful illustration depicts the most exclusive community in Malibu, California - The Malibu Colony. Centrally located, near shops and restaurants, The Colony is a gated community in Malibu which is home to many Hollywood celebrities and executives. It was one of the first areas inhabited after Malibu became open to the public in 1929. Carpenters from Hollywood studios were hired to build cottages for celebrities, like Bing Crosby and Gary Cooper. At that time, this area was called "Malibu Beach Motion Picture Colony." Today, there are about 120 homes within this famous gated community, 80 of which are located right on the beach.

Designed and built to benefit from breathtaking ocean views, these pricey homes are unique in both their architecture and their interior design. One thing is consistent though, the coastal scenery is like something straight out of the movies.

Living at the Beach and Living Room Design

Beautifully designed, this space is accented perfectly to incorporate the seaside color palette. The silver table lamps and blue glass vases bring a little bit of the outdoors in. The clean white furniture and white walls keep the space simple and clean, allowing the magnificent view to take center stage.

    Beach Home and White Furniture

This super modern home has a low vaulted ceiling that guides your eyes toward the ocean and straight to the large window that practically doubles as artwork. The minimal decor and linear furniture help keep the space open and fresh.

Mid-Century Modern Design and Beach House

This Mid-Century Modern style decor pairs perfectly with the architecture and wood-paneled ceiling. Magnificently designed with an entire wall of windows, it's no wonder this resident has plenty of seating in the living room.

Organic Living Room Design and Beach House

Perfect for entertaining, this open living room has no shortage of windows. Minimal furniture, including super chic bar stools keep the space simple, allowing the view to be the focal point of this space.

There's no question, architecture must take into account its surroundings and it seems to be even more important when designing a home in Malibu. Each and every one of these homes has an incredible amount of windows, with most of them taking up the entire wall. What makes these homes so special is that even with such huge open windows, due to the exclusivity of this neighborhood, the homes remain private to those lucky few who are able to wake up each morning and have a cup of coffee while curling their toes in the sand.

     Two Schindler houses in Inglewood

A pair of Rudolph M. Schindler houses in the Inglewood suburb of Los Angeles have been remodeled and brought into the 21st century. Schindler, of course, is one of the icons of California Mid-Century Modernism, with well-documented homes such as the Kings Road House in West Hollywood.

Seeing Double and Schindler houses in Inglewood

These gems are off the beaten path a bit and it's wonderful to see them brought back to life in a way that respects the line and form of the original plans.

Each has a prim two-bedroom, one-bath floor layout, with an open, airy look that makes the modern furniture look right at home.

The house profiled in this LA Times article had changed hands but twice in 70 years and still had the original doors and windows and contemporary lighting fixtures.

What's neat is that both houses sit side by side, right next to each other. In addition to the pair of homes, there is another Schindler house just down the street!

      Kitchen Design and Chrome Cabinetry

Do you find yourself being drawn to shiny objects? Chrome finishes have been popular for quite a while and never seem to go out of style. They add a reflective surface to the design and shout - "I am modern!" When I think of chrome compared to other finishes I think - fresh, new, and modern. The silver hue of chrome can easily blend into any color scheme and is also a great color combination when paired with bright colors.

    Contemporary home overlooking the Pacific.

One of the most sought after locations to live is along the picturesque Pacific Coast of Southern California. Residences on either side of the Los Angeles Pacific Coast Highway easily qualify as "dream" homes and feature award winning architecture. The interiors deserve just as much praise, designed full of chic furnishings and beautiful accessories by talented designers. Let's take a look at just a few of these smart and sophisticated structures overlooking the Pacific.

The Blair Home (above), designed by Architect Bruce Bolander, sits on top of the Malibu hills with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Concrete and steel are the ideal building materials for this contemporary structure, while minimal furnishings keeps the space cool and open.

Mid-century modern tract homes in Malibu.

Some of these swanky coastal homes don't sit on the edge of a cliff, yet still offer a bit of paradise. Malibu West tract homes provide the ideal mid-century modern dwelling for a more understated way of life in this luxurious neighborhood. According to the L.A. Times article, the 200 structures were designed in both traditional and contemporary styles to give the buyer an option, but architects Nisan Matlin and Eugene Dvoretzky favored their contemporary designs. They referred to the open space plans as Post and Beam construction.

The exterior architecture is not the only eye-catching element of these beautiful PCH homes. This modern living room overlooking the Pacific provides a chic yet comfortable retreat for its celebrity owner. The modern floor lamp will clearly only need to be used during the evening hours because there is no shortage of natural light here.

    yellow furniture gray furniture

Pump up your style with the slate gray and vibrant yellow color combination. The gray hue plays it safe, while the bright yellow commands the spotlight. Paired together they balance each other out to create an exciting interior! I love the gray and yellow color scheme in a living room, dining room, or heck just about in any room in the house. Below are a few of my favorite examples of the yellow and gray color combo.

Living Room Design and Yellow and Gray Color Scheme

The hot color combo is tied into the living room (above) in a few different ways. I love this example and how it shows you that even with an abundant use of gray and yellow, the space is not overwhelming.

Kate Spade's Bedroom and Gray and Yellow Bedroom

Design powerhouse Kate and Andy Spade can't be wrong! Their yellow and gray designer bedroom was featured on the cover of World of Interiors Magazine. The gray wall treatment is a neutral backdrop to the bright yellow striped headboard.

     Modern Yellow Kitchen Cabinetry

Don't forgot about the kitchen. HGTV Canada's design team Colin & Justin made a bold statement with the bright yellow cabinetry. It definitely adds a fun, playful element to the kitchen.
