With winter solstice right around the corner (it falls on December 21st this year), we have short and dark days ahead. Not only is lighting essential but also makes a big impact on a home's overall look and feel. For those of you that want to continue to have light-filled rooms but are wondering how you will add more lighting, don’t fear you can illuminate your space and amplify your style with these favorites I have to share.
Most homes don’t have a lot of natural light. If that’s true for your home, then adding floor lamps is a great option for a simple and easy fix. Floor lamps also provide a cozy corner with the perfect light for reading.
Ceiling fixtures contribute ambient lighting in a fashionable way that can highlight any design aesthetic. Whether you simply want to add a new look to your dining room, add functional lighting to your kitchen, or add a stunning fixture to your bedroom (similar to the above photo), a ceiling light may be the answer when long winter months drag on.
Here are a few of my favorite lighting options that you could add to your home:
Top Left: Robert Abbey Jonathan Adler Meurice Nickel Chandelier – Place this in your living room, nook or bedroom and your room will have no problem being fully lit from all of these lovely, tiny globe bulbs.
Top Right: Lafitte Clear Glass 10-Inch-W Jamie Young Pendant Chandelier - Mouth-blown clear glass shade has unique texture and style.
Middle: Jonathan Adler Havana Polished Nickel White Shade Floor Lamp – If you need a little extra light on a gloomy day add a floor lamp in the corner. This Jonathan Adler lamp features three cocktail shaker-like lights on adjustable arms and has multiple lighting settings.
Bottom Left: Double Gourd Slate Grey Ceramic 27-Inch-H Table Lamp – Put a pair together and place them on either side of a couch in your living rom or on your bedside table. The acrylic base gives this gourd lamp a more modern feel.
Bottom Right: Delta Lily Robert Abbey Modern Table Lamp - Would be perfect on a desk or entry table for a clean and contemporary home.

We love geometric art and of course modern architecture so when the two of them are combined you get stunning results.Technology has allowed architects to create work way beyond the standard box that many associate modern architecture with. The BiCentennial Civic Center (above) is constructed from faceted prisms made out of concrete. This creates a very unique play of light and shadow.
We were just talking about light and shadow, right? Now add color! Not only does architecture look like modern art, but it creates art on these white walls.
A crystal geometric ceiling light will create amazing play on light and shadow in your interior. Its like an expolosion in the sky!
Inertia Crystal 24" Wide Corbett Flushmount Ceiling Light
The bold black and white triangular facade wrapped around this dome structure creates a strong and dynamic backdrop to this urban Tokyo setting.
Modern pendant lighting can create this same dynamic feeling in your setting. This black and white geometric pendant (below) would be perfect!
Tetra Tiffany Style 7-Inch-W Pendant Chandelier
Traditional Japanese wood construction has morphed with modern day technology to create a stunning facade that looks more like a sculpture than a place to conduct business.
If you aren't lucky enough to live or work in one of these geometric architectural works of modern art then you can always bring geometric home decor into your modern interior.

I have a new obsession. Finding ridiculously beautiful, architecturally interesting staircase railings, then staring at them for hours on end and wishing I had a second floor in my home so that I'd have an excuse to create such a unique look. If you're a lover of modern lines that aren't boring (hand raised very high!), I can't think of a room detail that adds as much visual punch as a custom staircase.
The fantastic thing about this particular room 'accessory' is that whether you live in a big space or small, as long as you have a second story, it's doable. You certainly can't be shy about making a statement when it comes to home design though -- unlike a simple piece of home decor, these staircases are big, visual art installations that you probably wouldn't be swapping out any time soon. Choose wisely!
Which of these is your favorite? And if you were installing a custom staircase railing tomorrow, what kind of pattern, color, or material do you think you'd pick?

Welcome to the latest series, Outfit to Interior! In each post we'll be exploring the intersection of fashion and design, and boy-oh-boy it's a big place the navigate. Each inevitably draws inspiration and influence from the other. So let's take a look at translating this Valentino silk-crepe jumpsuit with modern lines and just the right amount of skin into an interior design project. The elegant silhouette and keyhole back give us plenty to work with.
What we're looking for first and foremost in a piece is a modern, sleek, and sexy vibe. Clean lines and metals with just the tiniest hint of surprise. Some interior designers are adamantly against ceiling fans, but I'm of the opinion that so long as it's fresh and fits the space then go for it! I love the feeling of a cool breeze and can't imagine life without them in my home. The Quorum Dragonfly Collection's Nickel Finish Ceiling Fan fits all of those requirements. The streamlined light grey blades offer up a little something different in the looks department, can't you just imagine our Valentino lady lounging about underneath?
A pair of Black Linen Cylinder Shade Antique Brass Swing Arm lamps would be a great match for our girl's bedroom or reading nook. The eleven-inch high black linen shades give these classic beauties just the modern unexpected touch we're looking for. I think our gal would place the Glitz Crystal Contemporary Table Lamp somewhere a little unexpected, like on a table at the end of a hallway or on the kitchen countertop. The bright chrome finish and sparkling inlaid crystals would brighten up any dark corner.
Throwing an impromptu dinner party is the hallmark of any modern woman, which means a great table with a great light fixture as the focal point. Check out the Possini Euro Pendant with White Frosted Concentric Shades. The frosted inner glass, brushed nickel finish, and white fabric all play together perfectly to create a piece that's both sleek and classic.
I'm betting her signature dish is something deceptively simple and delicious, like Chicken Tika Misala or Spaghetti Bolognese. And while she's in the kitchen cooking up such tasty dishes, she's probably doing all of her prep work right under a trio of Atmosphere Possini Euro Pendant Lights. I love the way their modern aluminum finish is "sliced like fruit" to let all of that glorious light shine through, quite the show-stopper!
This Contemporary Frameless Round Mirror measures nearly three feet across! If that doesn't make a modern statement, I'm not sure what does. I think it would look at home in our girl's entryway or hanging over the fireplace. And she could always change it up by placing it over the credenza or behind the couch. Endless possibilities, we love that in a piece!
Last but not least, our modern woman needs somewhere top perch while entertaining or surfing her favorite shops. A pair of Zuo Modern Wendover Steel Dining Chairs are just the ticket. The sleek silhouette and leaf-like back would be equally at place in the dining room or behind a desk.
