Everyone needs a modern wall clock for the new year countdown. What's your countdown style? We love the classic, modern look with a dash of retro.
We hope you're having an awesome last day of 2012. Make it count!!
Please join us in welcoming Kelly Beall from Design Crush one of our new contributors. We're so excited to have her! Take it away Kelly…
Welcome to the latest series, Outfit to Interior! In each post we'll be exploring the intersection of fashion and design, and boy-oh-boy it's a big place the navigate. Each inevitably draws inspiration and influence from the other. So let's take a look at translating this Valentino silk-crepe jumpsuit with modern lines and just the right amount of skin into an interior design project. The elegant silhouette and keyhole back give us plenty to work with.
What we're looking for first and foremost in a piece is a modern, sleek, and sexy vibe. Clean lines and metals with just the tiniest hint of surprise. Some interior designers are adamantly against ceiling fans, but I'm of the opinion that so long as it's fresh and fits the space then go for it! I love the feeling of a cool breeze and can't imagine life without them in my home. The Quorum Dragonfly Collection's Nickel Finish Ceiling Fan fits all of those requirements. The streamlined light grey blades offer up a little something different in the looks department, can't you just imagine our Valentino lady lounging about underneath?
A pair of Black Linen Cylinder Shade Antique Brass Swing Arm lamps would be a great match for our girl's bedroom or reading nook. The eleven-inch high black linen shades give these classic beauties just the modern unexpected touch we're looking for. I think our gal would place the Glitz Crystal Contemporary Table Lamp somewhere a little unexpected, like on a table at the end of a hallway or on the kitchen countertop. The bright chrome finish and sparkling inlaid crystals would brighten up any dark corner.
Throwing an impromptu dinner party is the hallmark of any modern woman, which means a great table with a great light fixture as the focal point. Check out the Possini Euro Pendant with White Frosted Concentric Shades. The frosted inner glass, brushed nickel finish, and white fabric all play together perfectly to create a piece that's both sleek and classic.
I'm betting her signature dish is something deceptively simple and delicious, like Chicken Tika Misala or Spaghetti Bolognese. And while she's in the kitchen cooking up such tasty dishes, she's probably doing all of her prep work right under a trio of Atmosphere Possini Euro Pendant Lights. I love the way their modern aluminum finish is "sliced like fruit" to let all of that glorious light shine through, quite the show-stopper!
This Contemporary Frameless Round Mirror measures nearly three feet across! If that doesn't make a modern statement, I'm not sure what does. I think it would look at home in our girl's entryway or hanging over the fireplace. And she could always change it up by placing it over the credenza or behind the couch. Endless possibilities, we love that in a piece!
Last but not least, our modern woman needs somewhere top perch while entertaining or surfing her favorite shops. A pair of Zuo Modern Wendover Steel Dining Chairs are just the ticket. The sleek silhouette and leaf-like back would be equally at place in the dining room or behind a desk.
Every year, Americans head south in the winter for a growing conglomeration of art and design fairs. In early December, the art world descended upon Miami for a weekend-long collection of more than 20 art fairs. In the next few months Southern California will see a handful of fairs, beginning with Los Angeles in January (the L.A. Art Show, Art Contemporary L.A., and Photo L.A.) and Palm Springs in February (Palm Springs Fine Art Fair and the Modernism Show).
Folks line the halls of convention centers and pop-up tents for these weekend-long parties, taking in thousands of works on sale, along with a never-ending series of art installations, performances and symposia by day. At night, luxury lifestyle brands foot the bill at any number of exclusive parties (see Pae White's city block-sized oceanfront installation from 2009 below)...Don't worry about getting a formal invite. Someone always knows someone in the art world.
To get your hands on a piece of art work, you can expect to pay as much as $1 million, but the window shopping is free and as good of a reason as any to attend an art fair. And for that, we recommend taking in Design Miami. There was no shortage of eye candy at this year's event (December 5-9, 2012), from the inflated tube foyer by NYC-based Snarkitecture pictured below...
...to the design installations inside:
A stark yet composed contrast was the name of the game at Design Miami, which got me thinking about how to get this same effect at home. Use throw pillows with bold patterns. Contemporary wall sconces with raw bronze finishes and rustic wood furniture. Graphic, text-based wall art. Effective pop of color such as red or orange modern table lamps.
Zuo Haxby Walnut and Glass Modern Coffee Table, Set of 2 Black and White Zig Zag Toss Pillows, Possini Lighting on the Square Bronze Modern Bath Wall Light, Splash Modern Coral Ceramic Rectangular 26-Inch-H Table Lamp, Family Rules White on Black 20" High Motivational Wall Art
Of course, if you've got some extra wall space and are in the market, art fairs are an excellent opportunity to find original art too. Remember, dealers are there to sell artwork and to that end, many are willing to offer payment plans and even discounts on your first piece of artwork. It's also possible to find work from emerging artists at a very reasonable price. So while it's too late this year for Miami, head to Southern California in January and February. The sun will be out and the art will too.

If you've been to the Downtown Art Walk in Los Angeles then you most likely have seen Robert Vargas on these streets painting live portraits. And you've most likely been mesmerized by not only how amazing these portraits are, but the how captivating his live performances are. As the crowd gathers around Vargas selects his models from the audience and creates gorgeous portraits in about 5 minutes. The spectators stand around, jaws dropped, hoping they are the next to be selected to have their portraits drawn by the oh so talented Robert Vargas.
There are amazing things happening down there and this Boyle Heights native and his Pratt Institute education are really bringing out the true characters.
The emotion that is captured in not only the performance, but in each piece is something that is truly represents the vibe of downtown LA.
The crowds gather around while Vargas goes to town! Who wouldn't want to be one of the lucky ones selected to have their portrait painted?! Hanging his work in your modern interior would bring so much character to your space. His work would be a great compliment to any of the industrial downtown lofts filled with modern furniture.
Vargas was commissioned to do a live mural of The Far East Movement last year at the art walk. Once the mural was painted, Far East Movement started their performance while the mural dried in the background. The finished painting symbolizes "staying present and capturing the moment," states Vargas. He continues, "Fans of FM and myself will get to experience both Music and Art like never before at the Art Walk."
You can not only find Vargas's work down at the LA Art Walk but you can also find his murals on buildings across East LA.
Artwork is the perfect way to bring character into your own home, and is even better when your modern home decor is created by an emerging artist who is able to capture all your emotion and spirit in one single piece. A trip to LA Artwalk to see Vargas is in order for us all.
