With winter solstice right around the corner (it falls on December 21st this year), we have short and dark days ahead. Not only is lighting essential but also makes a big impact on a home's overall look and feel. For those of you that want to continue to have light-filled rooms but are wondering how you will add more lighting, don’t fear you can illuminate your space and amplify your style with these favorites I have to share.
Most homes don’t have a lot of natural light. If that’s true for your home, then adding floor lamps is a great option for a simple and easy fix. Floor lamps also provide a cozy corner with the perfect light for reading.
Ceiling fixtures contribute ambient lighting in a fashionable way that can highlight any design aesthetic. Whether you simply want to add a new look to your dining room, add functional lighting to your kitchen, or add a stunning fixture to your bedroom (similar to the above photo), a ceiling light may be the answer when long winter months drag on.
Here are a few of my favorite lighting options that you could add to your home:
Top Left: Robert Abbey Jonathan Adler Meurice Nickel Chandelier – Place this in your living room, nook or bedroom and your room will have no problem being fully lit from all of these lovely, tiny globe bulbs.
Top Right: Lafitte Clear Glass 10-Inch-W Jamie Young Pendant Chandelier - Mouth-blown clear glass shade has unique texture and style.
Middle: Jonathan Adler Havana Polished Nickel White Shade Floor Lamp – If you need a little extra light on a gloomy day add a floor lamp in the corner. This Jonathan Adler lamp features three cocktail shaker-like lights on adjustable arms and has multiple lighting settings.
Bottom Left: Double Gourd Slate Grey Ceramic 27-Inch-H Table Lamp – Put a pair together and place them on either side of a couch in your living rom or on your bedside table. The acrylic base gives this gourd lamp a more modern feel.
Bottom Right: Delta Lily Robert Abbey Modern Table Lamp - Would be perfect on a desk or entry table for a clean and contemporary home.

We're excited to introduce Cerno as a new product line in the Euro Style Lighting family. Founded by Nick Sheridan, Bret Englander and Dan Wacholder Cerno is an industrial design and manufacturing company innovating modern LED lighting fixtures and furniture in Southern California.
We spoke with Bret and first asked how these childhood friends decided to start this adventure together.
BRET: There actually was a precise moment that we decided we were going to start Cerno. It was an early morning in December 2008 and we were driving down the coast trying to find some surf, however, the ocean was not cooperating and was completely flat. We ended up just taking a swim and talking on the beach. The 3 of us were ready for new adventure and were ready to jump off the entrepreneurial cliff together. It was a frightening, yet liberating and empowering leap to take with your 2 best friends, and that was the moment we decided to start what would become Cerno.

ESL: Which was your first light fixture? Are you still producing it?
BRET: We debuted the Silva, Sero, Onus, Alo and Cubo at Dwell on Design in 2010 and we are still producing all of them today. The Cubo is our most popular product, closely followed by several newer products. There were a couple prototypes that were never put into production that came before, but not too many.

ESL: Are you led by aesthetics or function?
BRET: This is a loaded question. Our products are definitely a marriage of form and function where neither the form nor the function is compromised. Nick and Daniel sit side by side, which facilitates nothing being lost through translation during the development process. Nick designs knowing what the intended function is, so in theory you could say function dictates form, but the real goal is to combine both seamlessly and I think that we achieve this very well.
ESL: How do you select materials?
BRET: We select our materials based one aesthetics, function, maintenance and manufacturability. We primarily use walnut and aluminum and we really like the juxtaposition of the two together.

ESL: Why local?
BRET: There are so many advantages to producing locally. All Cerno products are produced in the U.S.A. at our facility in Laguna Beach. Producing the product at Cerno headquarters allows us to continually be innovating and perfecting our product. It is much better for the environment. It also allows us to offer great customer service and make sure everything is produced to our standards of excellence. We also love that we are contributing to the local economy and creating U.S. based manufacturing jobs.
ESL: Why LED?
BRET: When we started Cerno, high quality LEDs fit for residential and commercial use were just coming online and we knew it was a great opportunity for us to embrace this great new technology. LEDs are energy efficient, emit a great quality of light, have the ability to be be intelligent. Another big advantage of designing with LEDs is their small size, which allows designers to create forms that were never possible, when one was designing around the 100 year old light bulb.

ESL: Where do you turn for inspiration?
BRET: We find inspiration in everything that we experience in our daily lives. We all read a lot and look around a lot. We do not chase trends, or try to recreate something that is hot. We design what we want to see built and that we believe belongs in the marketplace. Nick studied architecture and his personal experience and education definitely is the driving force behind our forms. Daniel studying mechanical engineering and his knowledge is what makes our product so functional and well resolved.
ESL: What’s next for Cerno?
BRET: Art lighting, we just launched Revelite by Cerno, it is the most amazing picture light ever produced and we are really excited to start helping people better illuminate their beautiful works of art. It provides even illumination top to bottom and side to side while emitting a light with extremely high color rendering properties. It the best picture light in the world and that is not hyperbole.
We enjoyed chatting with Bret from Cerno and we hope you're as excited about their future as we are!
Please join us in welcoming Victoria McGinley from vmac+cheese as one of our new contributors. We're so excited to have her! Take it away Victoria…
I have a new obsession. Finding ridiculously beautiful, architecturally interesting staircase railings, then staring at them for hours on end and wishing I had a second floor in my home so that I'd have an excuse to create such a unique look. If you're a lover of modern lines that aren't boring (hand raised very high!), I can't think of a room detail that adds as much visual punch as a custom staircase.
The fantastic thing about this particular room 'accessory' is that whether you live in a big space or small, as long as you have a second story, it's doable. You certainly can't be shy about making a statement when it comes to home design though -- unlike a simple piece of home decor, these staircases are big, visual art installations that you probably wouldn't be swapping out any time soon. Choose wisely!
Which of these is your favorite? And if you were installing a custom staircase railing tomorrow, what kind of pattern, color, or material do you think you'd pick?

In the spirit of Christmas tomorrow, we found some trees that fit perectly with a modern Christmas... Just in case you're running behind on your decorating. Or, they're also great ideas for next year!
Do you love the warmth and coziness of a real tree, but hate the mess? Well look no further; we have some of the best creative solutions for your modern Christmas! The Infinite Indoor Tree by Johannes Molin (above) is definitely a favorite. There are infinite ways to display it, hence the name, so I have no doubt you'll find one that works perfectly for you. And of course if you get tired of it after a few days, you can always change it up!
This plywood Christmas Tree (above) is so much fun. It's like a gorgeous modern sculpture that you just might not want to take down after the holidays! It's a perfect accent to your modern home decor and would glisten with some modern lighting shining brightly on it.
I know there are quite a few minimalist out there and this tree (above) is the perfect one for you. The solid walnut base and core is very streamlined and allows the modern decorations to stand alone. This would be perfect in a room filled with mid century modern furniture.
Pascall White Plastic Side Chairs
If you love rustic modern interiors then this is the perfect idea for you (above)! These tree branches are cut to perfect proportion to create an oh so balanced tree. The decorative lighting drapes across each branch and make the ornaments glisten, giving such a happy and peaceful feeling
This tree pairs perfectly with the industrial side chair (below).
Elio Gunmetal Dining Chair
And here's one final idea! Just do away with the actual tree and create a tree on the wall with the actual ornaments. You could sit and stare at this tree for hours! It's such a work of modern art!
No matter how you're decorating for the holidays, be sure to have fun with it! Happy Holidays to you all!
