In the history of romantic restaurants, perhaps no place stands out in the minds of Modern lovers more than Seattle's Canlis. In 1950, Peter Canlis hired architect Roland Terry to realize his vision of building "the world’s most beautiful restaurant." These historic photos tell the love story.
The result was an eclectic mix of modern motifs that, despite a fair share of redesigns over the years, was recently named a Top 100 Romantic Restaurant by the reservations website OpenTable.com. We love how you can use nail head trim chairs to instantly make dinner in a public space feel like a private admission to someone's personal library.
Much of the restaurant's charm was in the sweeping candelabra and one-of-a-kind lighting fixtures. The romantic touch, it seems, has a simple formula: find a modern chandelier and put a candelabra bulb on it.
You could call it quirky, funky, left-of-center, but Canalis in its earliest days was a reminder that modern design, at its best, isn't about imitation--it's about being true to one's self.
Having said that, here's how we imagine imitating Canalis at home:
Possini Corinthian Bronze Twist Multi Chandelier
Uttermost Kane Polished Nickel Wall Sconce
Set of 2 Wishbone Y Natural Wood Side Chairs
We'd like to thank the University of Washington Libraries, from whom these fabulous historic photos were borrowed.

Winter days short on sunlight are always made better with bright color and playful patterns! Ms. Preppy & Patterned knows that patterns don't have to necessarily be a print, they can also be a texture.
This Hammered Silverleaf Table Lamp with cylinder shade is a perfect example with its bumpy base, while the tall and narrow shade offers a dose of prep. Know where that lamp would look fantastic? Perched atop the Howard Elliott Unique Mirrored Cabinet. It's size is just right to use as a bar cabinet or entryway cabinet, and the etched mirrored surface offers lots of light and shadow play!
Ms. P&P's bedroom is an area of the three Rs – rest, relaxation, and reading! The bronze Besa Wall Lamp with Kona sunset glass offers up a punchy pop of color for those late night books that just can't be put down and those chilly morning wakeup calls that need a little help.
This black leather storage ottoman slides nicely into a living room corner when not being used and can be used for extra storage and seating in a pinch. The geometric nailhead pattern detailing makes sure this functional piece gets noticed on even the darkest winter days!
It would be a shame to neglect the smallest room in the house, Ms. Preppy & Patterned would never. A Modern Lilypad Light Fixture from Possini makes quite the bold statement and could easily be mistaken for a clear winter night's sky if you squint just a little.
I always love seeing how current trends and tastes permeate all levels of living -- from the clothes we wear, to the linens we accessorize with. And yes, even lighting!
As I was perusing ESL's fantastic stock of stylish chandeliers, I couldn't help but be reminded of current jewelry trends I've spotted. I'm especially partial to the drama of the first pairing. What about you?
I recently attended Las Vegas Market spending a week discovering the latest and greatest design trends of 2013! Today I'm sharing with you my top three 2013 trends from this year's Winter market!
INDUSTRIAL MODERN: Combing reclaimed wood, vintage leathers, and patina metals will give you that industrial warehouse feel. When possible use salvaged and reclaimed materials like the true industrialist would do! Incorporating just one reclaimed wood side table or vintage desk lamp will help you add some of that industrial modern character to your own space.
EMERALD GREEN & BRASS: Mixing emerald green (the Pantone color of the year) with brass will create an extremely sophisticated look! Using emerald green fabric on your larger furniture pieces, such as your modern sofa, will allow you to make the boldest statement. Brass is a great contrast to the emerald green and works beautifully as an accent such as a modern brass lighting fixture.
UNION JACK: The eclectic mix of English sophistication with a Maritime vibe and Union Jack themed furniture and accessories was very prevalent at market this year! It's a more refined look with a slightly rugged edge. Rich wood tones are mixed with worn brass accents while raw linen with exposed edges is tufted with sophistication. Worn leather suitcases and trunks would be perfect for accenting.
With so many ways to incorporate these Design Trends of 2013 into your own home or project, where are you going to start? We look forward to finding out!
