    Kitchen Design

The kitchen is often known as the heart of the home, which makes kitchen design an important matter. Traditionally, the kitchen is where meals are prepared and then eaten. However, these days, they're are not just for preparing and enjoying food but also where everyone seems to congregate.

While meals are being prepped, kids are often found sitting on a bar stool, at the counter doing homework or just hanging out. It's certainly the one room where everyone comes together on a daily basis. While kitchens have become more of a gathering place, they have also become more of a decorated space.

Yes, functionality is first and foremost, but now, more than ever, kitchens are designed with beauty and interest in mind. Kitchens have grown into warm and inviting spaces that carry just as much detail as other rooms in a home. There are many affordable ways to update your kitchen without a renovation. Three ways to add big impact with little effort are as follows.

Add a lamp. A lamp nestled on the counter top is like a functional piece of art. It adds interest to a space and brings with it warmth that brightens up the entire room.

    Modern Wall Mirror

Round Frameless 36" Wide Beveled Mirror

Add a mirror. Mirrors aren’t often used when decorating a kitchen but they are known to open up any space and make a room feel bigger than it actually is. If your kitchen doesn’t have a lot of windows, a mirror is the perfect way to open up the room.  And if anything, a mirror adds an unexpected touch to a kitchen.

    Modern Bar Cart

Add a Cart. Think beyond a mini bar when looking at a cart for your kitchen. Carts can be used to curate your favorite kitchen items and they're great for keeping appliances all in one spot, within reach. Quite possibly, one of my favorite ideas for a cart in the kitchen is using it as a shelf for herbs and plants.

Don’t be afraid to add a touch of the unexpected to your kitchen. It’s the little things that can sometimes make the biggest difference.

  • Tips for Putting Together the Perfect Gallery Wall

    Gallery Wall Design

I get a little intimidated when I walk into a house and find the most beautiful curated gallery wall. Instead of straight clean rows they're all perfectly mixed up, but without looking messy, and somehow it all works well together. Since then, I've had a few "Ah Ha!" moments about curating the perfect gallery wall and I'd love to share these few tips with you.

It doesn't have to be a perfect puzzle. I think this is what intimidated me the most, fitting all the pieces together perfectly while they were all different sizes. Then I realized after looking at a lot of images online, like the one above, that they don't have to fit perfectly. The edges don't have to line up, in fact it looks better when they don't! It does help to balance out sizes and colors throughout the wall space, but location and perfectly fitting pieces together shouldn't be your main goal.

    Dining Room Art

Find a variety of objects. Images, paintings, and drawings mix perfectly to create a great gallery wall. The more diverse the objects, the better.

In the image above you can tell it's well thought out, but still personal and meaningful by using a variety of mediums. There are old photos, pressed flowers, trinkets, handmades and sentimental items all together. It makes for such an interesting wall to look at and less like every pieces was purchased in the IKEA art department.

    Living Room Gallery Wall

Include color, but not too much color. I thought the image above was a good example of this. There's color but the main scheme is brown, white and throw in some burnt reds. Drawings are great for gallery walls because they're simple, usually black and white and don't overwhelm the other items. Too much simplicity can be boring though. Find a few pops of color amidst mutated tones and you can't go wrong!

I hope these tips helped. Good luck with your gallery walls!

  • Loft Living: Downtown Los Angeles

    Loft Living

There’s a building in downtown Los Angeles that takes loft living to the next level. The interior design redefines what it means to live well in the city, starting with the lounge upon entering. This upscale, industrial lounge feels like the hippest club in town with reclaimed wood and concrete columns. By pairing modern chairs and sofas with more classic pieces you get a very sophisticated, eclectic feel. The space is perfect for entertaining without having to step foot outside of your building.

    Loft Kitchen

The lighting throughout the lounge makes a huge statement! Series of modern industrial pendants over the kitchen, glowing softly is always a statement piece. However, the statement is truly made of over the pool table where the modern glass pendants hang from the ceiling at variable heights.

The view from each unit is incredible and makes for ideal artwork to frame these luxury lofts. The moldings below the windows give the space a more high-end feeling and even make each space feel a bit more New York than LA.

A low profile, modern sofa is a great choice in a space like this because it doesn’t block the magnificent view.

Grasscloth wallpaper is another great way to soften up a modern space and help the space feel rich with added texture.

Even the guests have a view! A view from every room, how great is that? Industrial accent tables paired with the vintage metal bed frame and cozy linens, create a soft yet urban feel. Sculptural wall elements really bring personality to any space.

    Loft Kitchen

Of course, in loft living a modern kitchen is a must! Notice the white cabinetry paired with light gray walls, allow the cabinets to pop. You may not be cooking so much when you’re living in a place that is so close to tons of great restaurants, but it’s still important to have a kitchen that is both functional and beautiful!

Redefining city living in Los Angeles is a crucial component to the revitalization of downtown. It continues to attract more and more people every day and it’s definitely a community worth exploring!

  • How to Design With Modern Benches

    Styling Modern Benches

Benches aren’t just for the park, anymore. In fact, benches are an ideal, functional decor accessory for the home or office. Any piece that offers both style and purpose to a space is worth investing in.

I’ve long been a collector of chairs, picking them up here and there when I’ve needed them or have had no place for them at all. There is just something enticing to me about a piece of furniture that offers someone a place to rest. Lately, I’ve expanded my seating search to include the modern bench. While we might not linger on a bench as we would in a chair, they are still a place to rest weary feet, share a meal or help hold our most important things needed for our daily comings and goings.

    Rustic Decor

One of my favorite places, which is a bit obvious, to place a bench is in an entrance at either the front or back of the home. In these entryways above benches are best to offer a quick seat of stability for taking off or putting on outer garments, such as boots and coats. They also offer a place to catch our bags and belongings or hide our baskets filled with gloves and hats, as we come in after a long day.

    Modern Dining Room

Another usual place that benches can be found is at the table. I think mixing chairs and a bench at the dining table is always interesting and never gets old. And if you have children than the idea of bench seating can be a brilliant one.

    Modern Bedroom

I have a few benches in my home and find myself moving them around for different purposes at different times. But these days, I’m loving benches for beauty. I love plopping them in space that needs some sprucing up, like maybe filling in that empty space at the foot of your bed. They add beauty on their own, yes, but I also love styling them with a variety of beautiful things. Covering a bench with pillows to add texture, pattern and depth is a favorite.

    Modern Decor

And another great idea is to use a bench as a place to display some of your favorite things. You can gather a grouping of books, candles, or set a large vase of beautiful branches on it, just off to the side.

The possibilities of decorating with benches are endless and the functionality just can’t be beat.

    Contemprorary Lighting

Recently I've had a lot of inquires from my blog readers and clients asking for suggestions on contemporary lighting for kids room. Whether it be a nursery or kids room. Honestly, kids rooms are some of my favorite to design because you can definitely have fun with the concept, especially the lighting.

It doesn't always have to be a normal chandelier or ceiling light. There are tons of fun options out there these days. The sky is the limit in the lighting department. That's why I've pulled together a few different options for you’re to “get the look” today – they range from floor lamps, to sconces, to ceiling lights.

    Modern Walll Light

Jonathan Adler Left Giraffe Robert Abbey Wall Sconce

This is a fun option if you are doing an animal themed room.

    Modern Floor Lamp

Pacey Silver Plated Arc Floor Lamp

If you’re going for a more modern look, I love the idea of a floor lamp.

     Modern Ceiling Light

I’ve been in love with this nursery for a long time, but this white alternative would be a great budget friendly option.
