My favorite homes are designed so that adults and kids can co-exist happily in stylish, shared spaces. The kind of homes where the kids room design involves beds made up with beautiful bedding, yet still jumped on often.
A lot of people are under the assumption that great design and kids don’t mix. There is an unspoken rule that when you have children you must shelf your sense of style and surrender to the plastic toys that be, by kid proofing your personal taste. Not true!
It took me a little while to debunk this myth. But, I’ve learned the art of creating a space that is inviting to both big and little people a like. It’s not a mystery, and in fact, it is an easily learned skill.
There really isn’t much that has to be altered as far your design atheistic goes. Yes, you may have to baby proof for a short season or pick a fabric that cleans up easily, but what it really requires is just a bit of adding in.
Take this shared bedroom (below) as an example. It’s modern and stylish in every sense of the word, and surely pleasing to anyone’s grown up taste. Yet, the first thing a kid would notice about this room is the cool drapes that hide the beds.
To the adults, perhaps, it is a solution to creating some privacy in a shared room. But to the child, it is a fort, a castle, and a secret place of escape (and the envy of all of their friends). The other thing that stands out in this room, and is a pleaser to both parties, is the brightly colored modern pendant light. It is one simple, well designed, element that makes the room. Again, the design is adult worthy and the color is kid happy.
Here are a few of my favorite pieces that add a modern and element into any space:
Hayden Marble Side Table, Pinguino Green and White Accent Lamp, Pascal White Plastic Wood Side Chair, Uno Black Owl Down Throw Pillow
Another way to “add in” is with accessories. You can easily add in a playful pillow or piece of art for a bit of fun and interest. Even tables that have a fun shape are loved equally among all ages. The room above is a great example of just making a few small additions that make all the difference.
So, no need to say goodbye to your style, nor be too stuffy or serious, just add in a bit of fun and imagination and everyone lives happily ever after.
