Crossover between creative fields is inevitable. Music influences film, which influences fashion, which influences home design and decor. It's not always obvious and it's not always literal, but as we move forward culturally, we carry creative influences into every corner of our little worlds.
Looking at what's breaking this summer in music, we've noticed that the vibe is a throwback to vintage mod and new wave...and we can't help but wonder how that will cross over into contemporary design.
First, let's start with our summer playlist:
Rush Midnight (pictured above):
If a lovechild between Billy Ocean and Haircut 100 was actually possible, dance-inducing pleasure popsters Rush Midnight would be it. Enough said. Too much said, really.
Bratty and brash, Savages wrap the post-punk energy of Patti Smith into a well-coiffed, contemporary package.
Washy and atmospheric indie rockers Deerhunter have always been good for summer lazing and listening, yet their most recent and raucous record, Monomania, is a much more assertive soundtrack, perfect for a lively and well-lived summer season.
Three sisters from the Valley in Los Angeles, the women in Haim were born and bred to be the pop stars they are. Their hit "Don't Save Me" is a throaty John Waite-esque anthem chronicling the heart's desire for co-dependence and the independent spirit's need to rebel against it.
Everything cools down at some time or another (even hot summer days) and The National have been providing that soundtrack for years. Poetic, measured, a touch dark and, as always, hum-along-able.
Now let's look at a handful of like-minded designs:
Clockwise from upper left: Tech Lighting Silver Glaze Aqua Glass Satin Nickel Pendant, Tech Lighting Fire Satin Nickel Cobalt Glass Mini Pendant, Possini Euro Darby Red Glass Pendant Light, Set of 2 Wishbone Y Natural Wood Side Chairs, Howard Elliott Z Mirrored Accent Table
Colored glass pendants are easy to match the vibe of your summer playlist. Mirrored accent tables and furniture definitely capture the mod mood. But is there really a correlation between music and design? Does one influence the other, or are they both just players in a greater cultural trajectory? We're not sure, but one thing's for certain: 2013 promise to be yet another good looking and listening summer.

Good design doesn't need to be relegated to indoors and it can most certainly be just for fun! We've rounded up some awesome modern design in outdoor spaces. Whether you're a parent or just a kid at heart, you'll love these.
This 20,500 square meter park is located in Sydney, Australia. Designed with the land rather than against it, this fun space has several surprises and activity points.
These might be the coolest tree houses we've ever seen! The color palette is really fun and modern.
Kids of all ages enjoy this skate park and who wouldn't, it's visually stunning!

A trend that I’ve been seeing on Pinterest lately is splashes of yellow used in modern kitchens. I’m loving this look for a few reasons. The first being that it creates a fresh space that is unpredictable. I also love how bright it makes a kitchen look. I’m all about sunshine filled kitchens and this is the perfect backdrop to create that.
Above we see that the owner used yellow just on the bottom cabinets. The great thing about this look is that it’s easily changeable. When you get tired of the yellow, just paint it another color.
This look is a lot more dramatic. The yellow covers the entire wall which creates a more concrete decision. I love how the yellow looks next to the natural wood and black tones. The large white hardware on the yellow cabinets is a fun and unexpected touch.
If you are not really into painting cabinets a bright color, try adding pops of yellow in accessories. Above they have used yellow in a small vase and a small plate. It’s not over powering and allows you to use a lot of other colors, if need be.
This last look is a real wow look! Even when paired with other primary colors, the yellow continues to pop out. As long as you mix wood tones and neutral colors with your bright poppy choices, you will never overwhelm a space. Have fun and think outside of the box!

If there's ever a time to go hog wild with pattern it's summertime! When the weather is warm it just feels like you can get away with more, doesn't it? I think so, and so does Ms. Patterned & Pretty. She likes to use repeats to freshen up her home and knows it doesn't have to be in your a you-Grandma's-floral-curtains kind of way!
The bold, graphic base of the Sydney Tango Contemporary Red Table Lamp gives a fun punch of color and pattern to this piece. Our Ms. loves the raised texture and thinks it looks great on an end table in her living room.
Who says the lighting fixture in your bedroom has to be conventional?! The Corbett Bangle Gold Tone Pendant is flat out radiant with its golden base and silver accents, and that circular pattern is both pretty and modern.
The Holtkoetter Antique Brass Swing Arm Light is perfect for offering some illumination for bedtime reading, one of our lady's beloved pastimes. She has one affixed near each side of the bed, so pretty with its matching shade!
And no bed setting is complete without a prettily patterned pillow that does double duty as decorative and snuggly. Ruffled Orange Lumbar Pillow is a whopping 24-inches wide and goes with Ms. Patterned & Pretty's mess of other colorful throws.
The finish on the Hammered Silver Leaf with Cylinder Shade Table Lamp is a lovely textured pattern all its own. Partnered with its oversized shade this beauty of a piece is right at home and making a statement on a desk or console.
A floor lamp like the Portico Modern Laser Cut Shade Floor Lamp not only offers a sweet and sleek pattern, it also offers extra light shining through all those perforations. Ms. Patterned & Pretty tucks hers away in a dark corner for some extra interest and illumination.
The clean, art deco lines and simply pretty design of the Brushed Nickel with Etched White Glass Wall Light Brushed Nickel with Etched White Glass Wall Light is gorgeous. It gives our lady's bathroom vanity a super soft light all while showing off her fun-loving side.
