Location, location, location. So goes the adage for real estate, and it may as well apply to offices too. When it comes to recruiting top talent, modern office decor is one detail that Silicon Valley's top players are taking notice of these days.
Skype recently unveiled their new North American headquarters in Palo Alto, California. And this is one nice place to work. The office embodies the creative spirit of an internet start-up with ample open spaces...and Foosball tables!
Brand experience runs throughout the design, from the Skype "mug shots" in the lobby (pictured at the top of this post), to city maps on the lunchroom wall clocks, symbolizing the company's global reach.
One gets a sense from the minimalist desks, pocket "parks" and open seating dotting the interior that this is a paper-free, wireless office environment.
And this is the truth of the new economy, isn't it? Work is digital, collaborative and fun, which means offices should be bright, open spaces. The new Skype offices rely heavily on contemporary pendant lighting. Here's our homage to some of the predominant Skype styles:

If an environment of talent, innovation, and ultimately, dedication is what companies are looking for in the 21st century, it appears that office decor is part and parcel to fostering such a mindset.
As much as I love my bright and cheery colors, sometimes you just need a cool and calm addition to your space. Enter, navy! I have been totally crushing on navy lately. It’s one of the best colors to mix and match with other colors so it is really easy to incorporate into your décor you already have! My favorite colors to go with navy lately are coral, mint and grey. It’s just kind of dreamy, don’t you think?
Also, unlike a lot of other colors, navy is kind of hard not to match with another navy. They are usually so similar they work! This room designed by Emily Henderson is kind of perfect. The navy is definitely the main and most dominant color, but all of the little accent colors and patterns around that gorgeous couch are amazing!

There are a lot of different styles that could all work with navy. This chair for example, is modern but also has a mid-century vibe to it. So of course I love it!
This pendant light has a fun coral shaped pattern to it to add some pattern to your room, if that’s what your space is in need of.
And this bed! Oh this bed. It’s like a gorgeous wingback chair in California king size! A great way to add some class to your room. I love it!
Can you just imagine all of the different styles and fun accents you could do with a bed like that? Also, it’s not too girly, so men will love it too! Total win, win.

Anyone living with two or more people in their home knows that things can quickly get disorderly and modern shelving is the key to happiness. If two or more of those said people happen to be children, then you know disorder can take on a life of its own without an organization strategy.
Whether you have an abundance of stuff or just the right amount, chances are you are always looking for ways to stack it, sort it and store it. And for me, modern shelving seems to be the best way to go about it. They're simple and streamlined. Keep in mind that with shelves whatever you store or stack is always on display. The simpler the shelving, the more your books and accessories stand out.
I happen to love the way this works, because when function and design meet it is a beautiful thing.
Storit Pure White 31 1/2-Inch-W Shelving Unit
When it comes to shelving in a children’s space, I love to keep it simple or go all out creative. The first look showcases how shelves can be used for basic storage.I love the clean look these shelving units provide.
Stockard Oak Wood Arteriors Home Modular Shelves
On the other end of the spectrum you can use shelves in a more decorative fashion. The idea of backing your shelves with wallpaper to give a unique and one-of-kind look is so fun. Then just prop your favorite keepsakes or children’s toys to complete the look. Bonus . . . . fewer toys on the floor.
Xert Narrow White with Tempered Glass Modern Zuo Shelf
Why not let shelves take center stage? When you pick a shelving unit that has modern lines and a great shape it’s like a piece of art. These shelves work great in any room of the house, but I love how they are used in the heart of the home. Dishes put up, taken down, art displayed, toys tossed up and plopped down for play.
Shelves are modern art in action. Now what other piece of home décor can boast that?

Sometimes, what's even better than beautiful architecture is beautiful architecture brought back to life by people who truly care. Case Study architect Edward Killingsworth’s masterpiece, the 1957 Opdahl House, fell into ruin, but thanks to a musician with a passion for modernism, it is celebrating its 50th anniversary in mint condition.
This cool pad is located on the island of Naples, in Long Beach, California and the current owner is DJ Greyboy Andreas Stevens who had a passion for bringing this home back to life. In addition to furnishing his own home, Stevens started a side career flipping pieces found buried at far-flung Salvation Army stores.
Stevens received the help of original owners Joyce and Richard Opdahl and Killingsworth to help guide him along the way. Old family photos provided unpublished views of the home and gave Stevens the clues he needed to bring the house back to its exact original state.
“I gave up my regular life for a couple of years,” Stevens says. In addition to refurbishing the structure, he went to extreme lengths to find original fixtures and match finished surfaces. He also tried to furnish the home according to the old family photos, but still keeping it his own and making sure he was comfortable living there.
Not only is the two-story space with balconied bedrooms a beautiful sight to see, but it's also helping Stevens complete his current album. He points out the similarities between recording in the Opdahl home to that in which Rudy Van Gelder recorded Blue Note’s classic albums.
Killingsworth said, “The most flattering thing an owner can say about one of my buildings is, ‘It’s my building, I did all this myself; the architects only translated my thoughts.’ The Opdahl House truly has become Stevens’s building.
Unexpected design is the best design. It’s always an exciting moment when your guests are oohed and awed by your space. One secret weapon is a gallery wall. Collections of art create beautiful moments in a space. One room that you don’t expect to see art is in the bathroom. That’s exactly why you should try it! Especially in the powder room. You will be the talk of the town.
Above we see a clean bathroom space with a simple gallery. It feels modern and fresh. The colors in the art pieces flow together, giving it a very cohesive feel. The mirror and trim above the tile also stand out with the art wall.
This powder room is awesome and dramatic. The deep charcoal walls allow the white matting in the art pieces to pop. I’m loving how it’s an eclectic collection of art, posters and letters. In this case, more is better!
This is a great example of how a little detail can make a big impact. These small prints are water-falling down the mirror in such a delicate way. And to think, all it takes is pictures and tape. Easy peezy!
If you’ve ever wondered how to dress up your toilet area, add simple shelving, some great art and a few accessories to snazz it up. This is also a great option if you’re not wanting to do an entire gallery wall.
