Lately, I have been noticing a trend in playhouse beds for kids. Have you seen them? It’s like the ultimate fort that you never take down. And, if you know kids, than you know that they love forts and hate taking them down.
I love this concept, because first and foremost it’s just plain fun, but also because there is a lot of attention on design. It’s almost like designing a mini house within your home. The detail starts with the shape, plays a part in the entrance and the outside and can continue on to the inside. The possibilities are endless.
The playhouse bed can be very modern and simple (as seen above) or ornate with many many details and decorative touches. It’s simply a matter of personal taste and preference.
If you are going for details than this playhouse bed takes the cake (pictured above). I love the attention to design on both the outside and inside. The interior has darling wallpaper and curtains, while the exterior is outfitted with cute little window boxes. But, what really makes the place cozy are the light fixtures adorned on the exterior and interior. Using plug in wall lights on the inside for late night reading is such a great idea. I also think hanging a contemporary ceiling light outside the playhouse would add a very magical starry night effect when looking out your playhouse window.
From a practical standpoint, a playhouse bed is also a great space saver. If you have limited space for a bed then why not build up, leaving plenty of play space below for play?
Or, if you have children sharing a room, like I do, than building a two-story playhouse saves you the space you’d otherwise use up with twin beds. It’s also a creative alternative to traditional bunk beds. And, if it's space you need than there is always the option to build storage drawers beneath the bed, which is a major bonus for stashing all the toys and keeping a tidy room (seen below).
Playhouse beds are obviously a lot of fun, but they are also a great way to get your little ones interested in design and to allow them to have a bit of ownership in decorating their very own little personal space.
If you are looking to have a little fun, be creative, save space and keep your kids room tidy, than a permanent fort in the form of a playhouse bed may just be the way to go. Your kids will love it and I have a sneaking suspicion (the kid in) you will love it too!

In my interior styling courses, I always suggest that a styled space is not complete without two key things: botanicals and bling. A little greenery and a little bit of sparkle are the finishing touches that make a space truly lively.
Today, I'm sharing my favorite type of bling: brass. Brass is classy and classic, it can feel both retro and modern, sophisticated and playful--and it definitely pumps up the glam factor. Add a bit of shiny brass in the form of a desk lamp, ceiling lamp or side-table to your space and it will automatically add a touch of chic to your room.

Although right now I call Los Angeles home, I've been lucky enough to have lived globally, in many cities around the world: Florence, Bern, NYC, Copenhagen, and have traveled from Marrakesh to Mexico City and many places in between. One thing that all of these cities have in common is that there is no one style that truly defines a city.
Through years of people of different cultures visiting, conquering, settling and assimilating into new places, decorating styles have overlapped, mixed and melded--you'll find Hollywood Regency styles in Milan, or a Moroccan-style den in Denmark. Here is a roundup of some global mash-up interiors that I find truly inspiring-- Plus my Euro Style Lighting discoveries, with a global vibe...and how great is that serape lampshade?!
